Shadowrun Returns In Kickstarter Campaign

Update 2: The Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter raised a total of $1.8 million. Developer Harebrained Schemes posted a video thanking its backers for supporting the project.

------------------------------------

Update: In less than a day, the project has already reached its goal of $400,000.

------------------------------------

Following the trend of early 90s PC titles being reborn through crowd funding, several members of the original Shadowrun are looking to do a new game.

Shadowrun Returns is described as a "graphically rich, 2D turn-based, single-player game with deep story interaction." The team is focusing on "meaningful character development, and highly-contextual tactical combat," which will surely please fans of the original game.

Development is being handled by Harebrained Schemes, a Seattle-based studio comprised of Shadowrun’s original creator, Jordan Weisman, and many of the original Shadowrun authors and designers.

“Shadowrun is a world that is near and dear to the hearts of the Harebrained Schemes’ team, as well as to legions of fans worldwide,” said Weisman. “Kickstarter offers us an amazing opportunity to continue this classic’s legacy, all the while making its fans part of the development process.”

The team's goal is to raise $400,000. If funded, Shadowrun Returns will be released on PC, Mac, and Apple and Android tablets.

Head over to the team's Kickstarter page if you wish to donate.

  • oh god yes... yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. personally this is the greatest thing to ever hit kickstarter. i am currently playing the one for sega genesis. the xbox 360 hack job was a disgrace and a half. would love to see this get funded well beyond so it can hit psn, and xbox live.
  • I'm going to fund the creation of my clone through kickstarter!
  • On the one hand, it shows that fans really care for their games. On the other, I feel the popularity of it is bordering on abusing the kindness of fans.
  • I LOVED Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis. In my opinion, that was the best game ever released on that console. I still enjoy playing it. I also have to say its nice they give a free copy of the game to everyone who meets even their lowest pledge bracket. I am looking forward to getting my copy!
  • Oh man. Just look at Shadowrun's logo. That alone is crazy beast.
  • To be honest, I actually enjoyed the xbox 360 version awhile back. It was different... in a good way I think. Anyways, I may have to wait to donate. 100$ just went to Wasteland 2.
  • Shadowrun is for role players who cant take their D&D training wheels off. Cyberpunk 2020 is where its at. i'll take my dark future without daisy grazing elves and magic.
  • Boo! i thought they were gonna do another CS type game.
  • Awesome, i like this trend, giving small devs (or big ones too i guess) the chance to make amazing things, sounds good to me.
  • I'll pass.
  • OH YEAH! I'm all over this! I loved Shadowrun on the SNES back in the day.
  • With the endless variety of shooters, it's surprising that there aren't more RPG's with magic and machine guns.  Well, the ones that aren't Japanese.  Or bad.

  • being an old school gamer of p&p rpg's Im loving this. hope this works for them. would love to play it on my pc. I honestly missed playing Shadowrun, since I don't have any friends anymore who play it.
