Update: Rockstar has unveiled the cover for "After the Fall", a free digital comic releasing on Thursday as a promo for the company's upcoming noir-tinged shooter, Max Payne 3.

"After the Fall" ties together characters from all three games in the series and touches on several points of the titular tortured cop's life. Look for it online May 3rd and in limited print release later in the month.

ORIGINAL STORY: Today, Rockstar announced that it has partnered with Marvel Comics to publish a three-part digital comic series based on Max Payne 3 -- and revealed that original Max Payne writer Sam Lake has signed on to co-write the books.

While Lake is not involved in the development of the upcoming game, he will share writing credits on the comic books with Rockstar's Dan Houser, who is writing Max Payne 3's script. The series will feature cover art from comic industry vets Greg Horn and pencils/inks from Fernando Blanco.

The books will be free via digital download on Rockstar Newswire, the official Max Payne 3 site, and "additional digital comic channels." The first issue is entitled "After the Fall" and will explore additional events surrounding Max Payne and Max Payne 2. Rockstar also promises the series will "shed new light on Max's early years."
