What Really Happened To Free Radical

Curious to know the full story behind the canceled Star Wars Battlefront sequel? Free Radical Co-founder Steve Ellis recounts the decline of one of the UK’s best developers.

Earlier in the month, we got a peek at the Battlefront 3 game that never saw the light of day. Now Free Radical Co-founder Steve Ellis lays out the full story behind the game.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Ellis details how Free Radical went from releasing hit titles like TimeSplitters 1 and 2 to struggling through its development of Haze, and eventually talks about how Battlefront 3 got canceled.

“We were still at that time probably a year out from completing and releasing the first game and they asked us to sign up for the sequel,” recalled Ellis. “That was a big deal for us because it meant putting all our eggs in one basket. It was a critical decision - do we want to bet on LucasArts? And we chose to because things were going as well as they ever had. It was a project that looked like it would probably be the most successful thing we had ever done and they were asking us to make the sequel to it too. It seemed like a no-brainer.”

The full story is worth a read, and contains plenty of insight into the difficulties of game development.

  • Fascinating interview. I always wondered what happened to Free Radical.

  • Knowing for certain that Battlefront III was practically finished and canned anyway hurts.

  • LucasArts has to be one of the dumbest companies in the entire game industry. They're sitting on boatloads of cash from sequels that they never made, and it's like they have no clue.

  • SHIIIIIIIITTTT! I loved BattleFront and BattleFront 2 for PS2 and I hope someone picks up where they left off.

  • Battlefield 3 needs to be made. Someone should hire me to give some ideas for this game, some are really good, plus I'd do it for free just to see this released!
  • :( very sad, I feel like Battlefront 3 could get them back on their feet though if they had the resources to get it finished

  • The last generation of gaming platforms had so many good Star Wars games: Kotor, the Jedi knight sequels, Rouge Squadron sequels, Battlefront series, hell even Republic Commando and Bounty Hunter were pretty cool. There were a few stinkers like that Obi-wan game, but we had so much choice that it didn't matter.

Now we just have a shallow Kinect dance simulator, a lacklustre God of War in space and those boring Clone Wars cartoon spin-offs. The only enjoyable Star Wars games I've played recently are part of the Lego series - and I think that was originally a game series from last generation.

The Old Republic clawed back some of the glory of the last generation, but it's not enough.

What happened to you Star Wars?! You used to be so cool.
  • Reading this actually made me angry... it was done, wtf lucas

  • I feel like this is just going to make me very, very angry at LucasArts. But what the heck - clicking on the link!
  • They certainly had problems transitioning into the new generation. This article is proof as to why new engines must be made that lower the development time, as that was one of their prime enemies, and it is also a problem for the industry, as a game too long into development can become irrelevant when it finally launches despite the strength of the team's ideas in the beginning. Also Lucasarts' "new direction" must have been planned out by an imbecile, cancelling a finished game and green lighting failures like The Force Unleashed 2. I do not see a happy road ahead of that company.
  • It's really too bad that they couldn't make another Battlefront

  • Last generation had such great Star Wars games. Think how fast a multiplayer Star Wars shooter would sell today! Too bad this happened.

  • I loved free radical, timesplitters was awesome, and i really wish they had gotten Battlefront 3 out, im sure it would have been amazing.

  • That is quite the interesting read, I wonder if it is true about Crytek being funded by the government. I would be pissed about that too, if I were in Ellis' shoes.

Its a shame, its sounds like it all started going wrong with the decision to change the engine. Then it just snowballed from there and forced them to grasp at straws, which killed them.

And if Battlefront is done, I don't understand why LucasArts doesn't release it. Its not like they didn't spend a ton of money on TFU marketing and Star Wars sells itself anyway.

  • R.I.P. Battlefront

  • Man I loved SW Battlefront

  • I hope, somehow, some day, battlefront 3 is made and released.....we'll be waiting.
  • Thanks LucasArts for not attempting to continue development with Battlefront 3, or making a sequel to Republic Commando. Thanks for shi**ing on the franchise, that you literally wouldn't be developing games right now without, and making crap like Kinect Star Wars and Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes. Thanks, and F*** YOU!!!
  • That was quite some story, Free Radical had. Still hope that Battlefront III can be made in the nearby future.
