What Really Happened To Free Radical

Curious to know the full story behind the canceled Star Wars Battlefront sequel? Free Radical Co-founder Steve Ellis recounts the decline of one of the UK’s best developers.

Earlier in the month, we got a peek at the Battlefront 3 game that never saw the light of day. Now Free Radical Co-founder Steve Ellis lays out the full story behind the game.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Ellis details how Free Radical went from releasing hit titles like TimeSplitters 1 and 2 to struggling through its development of Haze, and eventually talks about how Battlefront 3 got canceled.

“We were still at that time probably a year out from completing and releasing the first game and they asked us to sign up for the sequel,” recalled Ellis. “That was a big deal for us because it meant putting all our eggs in one basket. It was a critical decision - do we want to bet on LucasArts? And we chose to because things were going as well as they ever had. It was a project that looked like it would probably be the most successful thing we had ever done and they were asking us to make the sequel to it too. It seemed like a no-brainer.”

The full story is worth a read, and contains plenty of insight into the difficulties of game development.

  • R.I.P Free Radical...
  • It's a shame, but I guess Battlefront was pretty similar to Battlefield anyway, maybe Dice can do something with that...
  • Free Radical 2012

  • RIP Battlefront 3...
  • WHAT!? Is lucas arts to scared to make too much money from their franchise that doesn't involve sh*ting on it!? Battlefront 3, republic commando 2, KotoR 3...heaven...It can be done...there is always a way.
  • cue best impression of lame "NOOOOOOOO!!"
  • If only this was made, one can only wish someday.
  • Kickstarter please.
  • Hey theres darth vader :D tee hee.

  • Free Radical was amazing i was sad when they went under...Me and my friends had a blast back in the day with the timesplitters series
  • i remember being so disappointed when they closed, and timesplitters 3 was cancelled
  • Maybe one day LucasArts will rededicate themselves to making creative and quality titles again. Until that day I guess we're stuck with subpar games in which sales are driven by the huge marketing muscles behind them, not the quality of the product itself.
  • Troy and Abed do not approve
  • I really hope the May the 4th announcement is Battlefront 3 finally, I can't imagine LucasArts abandoning the series with war-games like CoD and BattleFIELD and 3rd-person action games like Uncharted being so popular right now. Plus other Star-Wars game-series' like The Force Unleashed and the Lego games (while largely unchanged from game to game), have done very well over the past few years. P.S. Tag says "battlefield 3" not "battlefront 3", just pointing it out Ben.
  • I SUPPOSE I could read the full story.

  • *sigh* and i was looking forward to Battlefront 3... I hope they make it eventually it's definetly worth it, instead of the little PSP titles they did. I know they are gone, but maybe somebody will pick it up.

  • OMFG...what could have been... :/

  • Ugh... How long must we wait for Battlefront 3? Are they scared of making too much money?
  • Maybe they could give the rights to dice to make battlefront 3 cause battlefront 3 plus frostbite 2 equals best shooter ever made in history
  • too bad.
