Nintendo Plans To Offer Digital Game Sales Same Day As Retail

Nintendo appears to be embracing digital distribution in a big way, with the announcement that future 3DS and Wii U games will be available for download the same day they hit store shelves. Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata revealed the strategy in the company's presentation to investors. The first game released under this digital initiative will be the 3DS game New Super Mario Bros. 2, which launches this August.

Iwata says that customers will have a choice in how they purchase future first-party Nintendo releases on both the Wii U and 3DS. Players who opt for the digital route can download games directly onto their system's SD memory card through either the Nintendo online shop or by inputting a 16-digit code that can be purchased at retail. Iwata says that physically and digitally distributed formats have their own advantages, and that Nintendo wants to give players a choice. It may be more convenient for players to acquire the digital versions of games, but they're locked to the system that they're downloaded onto. Players who do a lot of game swapping with friends will have to stick with physical copies of their games.

Nintendo is also allowing sellers of those download vouchers to set their own prices. Iwata points out that so far, games on Nintendo's eShop have fixed prices, which is something that doesn't necessarily work in a retail environment. Instead, players can expect to see vouchers for specific games to get price reductions after they've been available for a while.

What do you think? Are you surprised to see Nintendo going in this direction? Do you think Microsoft and Sony will fully embrace similar strategies as we move into the next generation of hardware?

  • Sounds like a good idea to me. If you're going to go digital, this is the way to do it.
  • Cool.

  • Sony already has embraced this model with the Vita, even offering discounts on the digital version.
  • digital is not the future. i'll always buy my games at the store.
  • This sounds great and really smart too. Setting the price for download vouchers is awesome. I might be falling back in love with Nintendo.

  • I always need a physical copy of my games. I don't really like downloading arcade games either. Too much could go wrong and a lot of money could be lost.
  • This removes the ability to sell/trade those used games in for credit. I wonder if it's more about convenience or the used game market...
  • Nintendo has a lot of catching up to do in terms of digital content (like... a whole lot), but it's starting to seem like they are catching up fast. Only thing that concerns me is system locking.
  • Microsoft and Sony will copy Nintendo ALWAYS. But in fairness they did start this trend. My big question is will day one downloads be cheaper than at retail. If so I'm sold, at least on the concept. The WiiU I am so back and forth on.

Welcome to 2010, console video games!

  • Please do. Who needs outside anyway?
  • Nintendo really seems to be stepping their game up in the online department. I love the idea of simultaneous digital and retail releases for WiiU and 3DS. It really opens up alot of options without depriving you of others (PSPGo, although fixed with Vita). are you telling me I can have access to New Super Mario Bros 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising without having to carry a crapload of cartridges? sign me up!
  • Sorry, not interested if it's going to be locked to a system instead of an account. It's an admirable step, but without tying digital purchases to an account, they're still effectively in the digital stone age. Every other online system is account-based and Steam has been doing it for 7+ years now, so there is no excuse if this is the case... except for the fact that this is Nintendo, and half-assing everything is what they do.
  • In my opinion, physcial copies of games are like a handful of cash. It feels good to hold a few hundred dollars in bills, and it awesome to look at my collection of games on my shelf.

  • Of course! I'd love to take up valuable space on my SD card and have usage of my game heavily restricted to save no money off of the retail copy!
  • well, i mean they kinda already started with Virtual Console... speaking of... will we be able to re-download games which we have already purchased???
  • I hope everyone starts doing this in the near future, third party and otherwise. I'm a fan of retails games myself, but it's always nice to have a choice. It would be especially helpful for playing older games that are harder to find.

  • This sounds great, the only problem is the Wii U's pathetic storage problem (currently rumored at 8gb).
  • look, although digital sounds futuristic disks will always be better than digital
  • "Players who opt for the digital route can download games directly onto their system's SD memory card..." Was this confirmed that the Wii U will not have a standard hard-drive?
