Portal 2 Test Chamber Editor Available May 8

Today Valve announced that the Perpetual Testing Initiative DLC for Portal 2, which allows players to easily create their own test chambers, will be available May 8 – for some users, at least.

According to Valve's press release, the DLC "allows players to easily create, share, and play Portal 2 puzzles. The Initiative comes with a simplified puzzle maker that allows that creation of mind-bending puzzles without ever leaving the game." The catch? It's only being released on PC and Mac. Players on those systems can download the DLC via Steam for free May 8.

I couldn't think of a better format for incorporating user-created content into an FPS than Portal's isolated test chambers. It's just too bad console owners are apparently being left in the lurch (though not entirely surprising).

We have asked Valve if it has any plans to release the DLC on 360 or PS3, and will update this story if we hear anything back.

  • This is so sweet! I love anything Portal related! Plus, this is one of the best games I've played in a long time!
  • very cool. hope to make some awesome maps. Even though PS3 and 360 owners might not have this DLC...it would be awesome if these maps were at least playable on console...more likely would be available to play on PS3 due to the cross-platform advantage....
  • I want this for xbox!!!
  • Awesome. I love this idea. I can see a lot of the Portal community creating very amazing and creative test chambers.
  • Wow, it only took a year to get this out and I forgot about this DLC. It kinda sucks that console people can't make their own chambers, but I think that they said when the game first came out that the levels will be playable across all platforms. Don't know if this is still the plan.

  • Mod
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! WHY NO 360!?!?!?!? I'd buy it again for PS3 if it was a play station exclusive even.
  • This is awesome, cant wait to put my Steam friends through some hell! Mwahaha!

  • All my dreams have come tr--oh wait, PC or Mac? Screw my dreams, then.

  • CAN'T WAIT!!!

  • took them long enough. IMO this should have been released long ago shortly after the game was released. the main single player was 6-8 hours long and the multiplayer was another 5 hours. wouldve liked it better if it came earlier.

but this is still great news. Im definitely going to spend alot of time playing through the communities custom maps. hope they bring up a mega hard puzzle.

  • I don't intend to sound disrespectful but Valve sure takes its time with DLC, the game is already a year old.
  • this game was incredible and these could be a ton of fun!

  • Halo started this idea. Just saying.
  • At first I thought you were joking about it only being available for pc or mac and I was a little confused. Then I realized it's also a console game XD ...Funny, I actually played the original portal on xbla.
  • FINALLY.

  • It needs to come to come to consoles. I will pay top dollar.

  • Im sad I wont be able to experience the awesomeness of portal's new dlc but valve has always favored pc so no surprise there
  • Too bad for console owners (myself included).  Hopefully we hear something from Valve regarding the matter.

  • On the bright side, PS3 owners DID get a PC version of the game for free download on steam...
