The lights are on
Rumors surfaced earlier this year that developer GSC Game World was closing and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was being put on ice. Those rumors were true.
Today it is confirmed GSC Game World has been shut down and work on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. sequel has been halted. Not all is lost, however. Team members of GCS formed a new studio, Vostok Games, and are working on a new project.
"We did not reach agreement with the rights owner regarding the use of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. brand, that’s why we made the decision to move forward as an independent studio with a new project. That day became our starting point for Vostok Games," the team said on its official website.
Vostok is working on a free-to-play, massively multiplayer online first-person shooter called Survarium (working title).
"The concept of Survarium is a next evolution step for the idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we’ve been working on for the last ten years, said project lead Ruslan Didenko. "Survarium will go way further forcing mankind to fight for survival not only within the closed area of Chernobyl zone, but also far beyond."
Survarium is set for release sometime near the end 2013 for PC. Posted above is the game's first concept artwork.

Wow, that SUCKS. I heard that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was a fantastic game for it's time. Hopefully Survarium will continue the essence of what made so many people like the original.
I checked out STALKER at a friend's place, it was decent. I'm sure he's bummed there will be no sequel.

So, instead of building another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, they are turning to a F2P MMO structure. God damn it. NO MORE FREE TO PLAY! It is, in my opinion, the worst game structure, and to be honest, their game idea sounds (almost) doomed to fail. Maybe it's just me though. I never got a chance to play the first STALKER, but was hoping that I would be able to play the second one and experience the things which people remembered from the first game. Now I won't be able to, and will just have to get the first game. Also, just one more time in case anyone missed this part, I hate free to play games. They suck. The end.
Also, it's unfortunate how just because an agreement couldn't be met, we get screwed out of possibly amazing games. I don't like what publishers do. (Most, not all.)
