Looks Like Next Call Of Duty Game Will Be Set In The Near Future

Could Activision be moving the next installment of the alternate-year Call of Duty from the past to the future? It looks as though we'll be parting with that tradition soon, if a teaser image and accompanying video on the game's official site is to be believed.

Details are scarce on callofduty.com, but they're slowly starting to emerge. The site is currently littered with monitors displaying a "coming soon" message. A few are filled in with static, however. If you click on one of those images, you're treated to a shot of a weaponized quadrotor drone, which links to the amusing FPS Russia video shown below.

As the host teases, the technology shown in the video is still 10 or 15 years away. He adds that it could be in the next Call of Duty game, however. Then we're treated to a series of demonstrations of the vehicle "in action." The vehicle, which is purportedly equipped  with a100-round magazine and controlled with a tablet device, makes short work of a variety of targets.

We'll know more about the next Call of Duty when it's officially unveiled on May 1 during the NBA playoffs.

  • Does anyone else get really excited when they think about future warfare? I'm not talking about the deaths, I'm talking about the technology. My father is a military engineer, and he builds stuff like smart scopes and sniper detectors. Pretty soon, soldiers will look like the Ghost Recon games, and the weapons will look like BF 2142! (side-note: I really hope DICE releases BF 2143!)

  • That has to be THE COOLEST toy I've ever seen in my entire life.

  • That was really awsoem cant wait to see waht the game is like if thats in the new COD.

  • Fakeness aside, that's a pretty cool promotional video for the next CoD.

  • Looks sweet but I don't know if I want to buy another CoD

  • that's not really that special..? There's all kinds of drones already out there

  • I love near future military games like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and the next CoD. It's so much fun using gadgets that aren't around yet but will be in the near future.

  • Pretty cool tech. I was wondering when Call of Duty would copy Ghost Recon.

  • please just have zombies!!!!

  • yeah lets make a noisy ass vehicle instead of something that can fly higher, quieter and strike harder and faster...reaper...

  • Won't make a difference unless there's Zombies.

  • WORLD NEWS UPDATE:  Iranian news reports they've gotten ahold of an early copy and as we speak top scientists are reverse engineering it to wage war on the west!!! Stay tuned for more...

  • Meh, it will be Black Ops 2. Mason will probably have the same role in this as Reznov had in BO.

  • Holy freaking crap! In Russia, we get high tech weapons that won't be out for 10 years and we make them explode. I want one.

  • I was kinda hoping for a Black Ops 2 but this has definitely peaked my interest

  • Still don't care.

  • Haha, thats great!

  • I have to wonder realistically how accurate something like that could be... not very is my guess, which means it would be forced to engage from very close quarters... where it will be a slowly hovering duck, so to say.

Very amusing gadget to watch in a video like this, but real world application...? I don't see it.

  • Poor drone

  • Wouldn't be surprised if this is just them teasing a new killstreak for this year's COD. It's cool that the're moving into futuristic warfare, but I'll probably be too busy playing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to bother getting this.
