Analyst: PS3 Doesn't Need A Price Drop

Price drops are always a popular move, but Jesse Divnich, vice president of insights and analysis at market research firm EEDAR, believes that the PS3 doesn't have to do that just yet.

Although the PS3 is behind the Xbox 360 in sales, Divnich told GamesIndustry International he doesn't think it's time for Sony to do anything drastic. "I don't believe the PlayStation 3 needs a price drop at the moment. Sales have been consistent and in-line to what one would expect for a platform that continues to successfully grow its install base so late in a console cycle."

We'll have to wait and see what this holiday brings, and whether the release of the Wii U will change Sony and/or Microsoft's mind about the prices of their consoles.

  • I'm an analyst. The PlayStation 3 just needs better promotion, better games and better support. From the commercials, the PS3 just doesn't look as entertaining as the Xbox 360. It doesn't have many die hard games in my opinion except for God of War 3 and the support is awful. Just looking at the interface of my Xbox 360 compared to my PS3, my Xbox 360 out beats it. Many gamers know the cool features of an Xbox 360, even non gamers. The Xbox 360 is cable box, has dedicated media services, live UFC fights, best YouTube app I've ever used,ESPN, Facebook and Twitter app, MLB app, Netflix, Hulu Plus, and more. I know the PS3 has an MLB, Hulu, and Netflix app, but it really isn't know about until you get the system. MicroSoft is being smart and Sony isn't being so much. And people call Americans stupid. A price drop isn't really necessary, but a $20 drop will probably boost sales and give some added hype and reason for buying. $230 for a 160GB PS3 and $300 for a 320GB PS3. No price drop is needed on the 320GB model. Sony needs to follow MicroSoft's footsteps in this generation of gaming.
  • Maybe they should drop it by 20-40 bucks, but I think the price is good.

  • If you haven't gotten a PS3 yet by now then you're missing out. The next generation consoles are almost upon us.

  • I beg to differ. A price drop would deffinately put the pressure on Microsoft, and will sell PS3's like hot cakes. I've went through 2 PS3's. Both blu'rays stopped working after updates. The 1st being a general PS3 update and the 2nd a PS Home update. Believe it or not, but it's true.
  • agreed

  • It really doesn't matter to someone like me, who already owns a PS3, but I can speak for other fans and say that It'd be nice to ALWAYS have a price drop. The initial price for PS3 was completely insane.

  • im waiting for a vita drop so i can get eeeeet

  • Anyone who does not own a PS3 at this point is just cheap or broke....
  • price drops should also be on game discs.. comment if you're with me!
  • Come on Sony! Make the price for the PS3 $ 119.99! That's freaking reasonable price!!!!

  • I bought my second PS3 yesterday because of the GameStop one week $50 price drop. At $199, the PS3 is a great value with Blueray, FREE Netflix (yeah I am talking to you Microsoft) and great games. The PS3 doesn't get enough credit for just how terrific a multimedia entertainment console it is. I was on the fence for the second console but the GameStop price drop was the incentive I needed to buy.
  • that's the same thing that was said last year before christmas...

  • Yet another analyst whose opinion gets the headlines.  If PS4 is announced or even formally acknowledged at E3, Sony will benefit from a $50 price cut, as their name will be up there in people's minds and act as further incentive to pick one up.  Also if PS4 releases according to most predictions (2014) they WILL cut it next year to line up with the new console.

BTW, who else feels like most of these analysts get payed just for saying something crazy?

  • Happen Drop Price PSN kind don't know.

  • I think it does, since many are opting for the Xbox 360 purely based on price.

  • until its life cycle is due, which isnt for at least 2 years at the earliest, i would agree that no it doesnt. i consider it a steal to purchase the ps3 at $249 at this point considering i bought mine for $600 and change (it included Heavenly Sword) back 3 years ago. i dont understand people who say it needs another price drop.

  • A price drop would help a brother out, with the near end of my warranty on my system. I could use at least 2 more years on my system, three years is not enough.

  • It's more a matter of can Sony being so deeply in debt afford a price drop, not if the PS3 (or the Vita for that matter) needs one. When Sony decides they can afford to cut prices they will. It has nothing to do with quality of parts or bang for your buck they will sell the PS3 and Vita for as little money as they reasonably can to get them in as many hands as possible so they can sell more games which is where they make their money.

  • i miss my ps3 machines.had three got stolen and i was using them for commercial services they brought me good returns.now am out of business. The prices are still high here in kenya cant afford again.

  • i miss my ps3 machines. They a good business here in Kenya.Had three of them stolen..Wish they were less cheaper so that we afford again
