Valve's Employee Handbook Is Online For All To See

Update: A Valve representative confirmed to Game Informer this handbook is legitimate.

-------------------------------------

We got some insight into the inner workings of Valve last week when employee Michael Abrash posted a blog discusses the company's odd structure, and now we get to see a lot more.

Originating on Flamhaus.com, a PDF version of Valve's employee handbook appeared online. It could be a total fake, but if it is then it is a very good one complete with illustrations. If it is real, then I would direct your attention to page 22 where you can see a guy wearing a Half-Life 3 shirt! It probably doesn't mean anything, but any Half-Life news is news. And I mean literally anything.

  • Wow that is crazy that that is actually real. I was reading it the other day and figured its a type of office gag at the most.

  • This IS real? Best job ever...

  • Nice read

  • wow, sounds like a great company, i would only work there if i got to be the boss though

  • Holy Crap not expecting that

  • Great! Now everyone can see Valve's twisted sense of company discipline. You have to wonder, does Glados really run Valve?

  • That's awesome. I wholly applaud their system of work. Still, I think my dream company is Bethesda.

  • Wow... that is a very unique way of running a company. But I guess it works for them, they have certainly been successful.

They have to have the right people working there though. I can think of a lot of talented people who just simply could not set aside their ego and work in a non-fixed structure like this.

I imagine they have to be quite thorough in the interview process, or weed out some of the people who can't get along or won't pull their weight.

Or maybe it's just so great and so serene and pays so well that everyone really does just get along perfectly. Could Valve really be a utopia?

  • Seeing this convinced me I wanna work for these guys. Truly some great innovators, not only in game design, but in how they treat their staff. Nice change from all those Team Bondi-esque horror stories.

  • This is so funny!

  • This was an interesting read. It gives some great insight to my favorite gaming company.

  • [Update]

    Fantastic that it's real.

  • This was awesome

  • No way they really run Valve this way. How do you project manage in a free for all? I mean with this model it would take 5 or 6 years just to develop one game. Oh.
  • Half-Life fans, here is some bad and some really bad news. In a recent interview with SevenDayCoolDown, Gabe revealed that Valve’s silence is fairer to the Half Life fans. According to Gabe, Valve has not finalised the formula yet and they are still experimenting with Half Life 3′s concept. Currently, there are a lot of twists and turns and those decisions could possibly drive Half-Life fans more crazy.

    As Gabe said:

“The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we’re going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what’s happening next.”

This pretty much means that Valve is not ready yet to announce anything regarding this rumored title.

  • I want to work at Valve now.

  • Speaking of anything being news... does anyone actually care about this story? Because I don't. I love Valve and all, but couldn't care less about their odd company structure or employee handbook.
  • Very odd wait to introduce people at Valve, yet I think its cool that they make it like this to kind of relieve the stress of working at a new place.

  • Legitimate internal company farce.
