Valve's Employee Handbook Is Online For All To See

Update: A Valve representative confirmed to Game Informer this handbook is legitimate.

-------------------------------------

We got some insight into the inner workings of Valve last week when employee Michael Abrash posted a blog discusses the company's odd structure, and now we get to see a lot more.

Originating on Flamhaus.com, a PDF version of Valve's employee handbook appeared online. It could be a total fake, but if it is then it is a very good one complete with illustrations. If it is real, then I would direct your attention to page 22 where you can see a guy wearing a Half-Life 3 shirt! It probably doesn't mean anything, but any Half-Life news is news. And I mean literally anything.

  • Okay, Now I want to work at Valve even more.

  • well this explains why in the credits the people do not have job titles

  • i just dont get it this Half-life biz,my orange box is collecting dust,i only bought it for the collector appeal as it became hard to find in my area and pricey.and then i got hooked on Portal, but still i just dont care for Half-life,i see it as it being all hype, and overrated.i dunno to each there own.

  • Very creative idea!!

  • epic! I hope it's real

  • The handbook makes me understand the creative freedom that reigns Valve, and why Gabe Newell is not crazy nor hurried about filing for an IPO. As long as you're creative and not driven by earning (so I hope), you're welcome.
  • This is awesome.

  • Like I needed anymore reasons to want to work here... stop taunting me VALVE!!!

  • Things like this are why Valve in my book, is the greatest company ever. Valve just has that personality that you can't help but like. If I were a retired Billionaire, Id be jealous of the people working at valve
  • I love the Glossary at the end. "14 year old boy" "Fish Bowl" where they make Sharks and Mantas fight to the death. The Parking Garage Elevator that likes to take Hostages and the repeated reference to them planning to be in Seattle.

The last parts are the best though. "WFH—Working From Home. What to do if a single snowflake falls out of the sky."

"Josh Weier—Variously pronounced “Josh Weere,” “Josh Wire,” “Josh

Woe-Rue,” “Josh wuhh…[trailing off],” and “Josh Joshington” by those of us who stopped caring. They’re all equally valid!"

  • That was fantastic.  Seems like a great place to work.  The glossary was probably the best part.

  • Best employee handbook I know of

  • thisis the most amazing employee handbook i've ever seen

  • Ohhhh thats cool.

  • I can't believe I read that whole thing, thanks for posting it, very interesting read.

  • THEY BE TROLLING. and i can already see a Half life 3 fan discussion.

*edit*: i just noticed a companion cube in the pic.
  • it adooooowable

  • That actually makes me really happy. You know, it's funny. I read the handbook, and their business structure is undeniably similar to socialism. It was really interesting, 'cause it got me thinking about how - given the success of valve - if maybe it would be possible for our country's capitalist market to exist as a series of businesses that share this same (or at least a similar) pseudo-socialist business structure. It'd be pretty rad.
  • So if this is legit, then does that mean they're purposefully taunting us by releasing it with the drawing of the dude with a Half Life 3 shirt?

    That crap is getting old.
