Nintendo announced it's bringing New Super Mario Bros. 2 to the 3DS in Japan and North America this August.

The announcement was made tonight during the company's Nintendo Direct conference. Several screenshots were shown as seen below. Earlier this year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata teased a new 2D Mario game was in development for the handheld.

"This all-new, side-scrolling adventure features Mario, Luigi and all your fave characters from the Mario series," Nintendo says.

A release window for Europe was not provided at this time.

Ohhh Nintendo how you give me mixed feelings. I generally love your first party titles (if you ignore the Olympic games and such). At the same time I would like to see some of that amazing game design talent put towards something...a little more mature. I am not saying abandon the Mario games, but try a new IP of some sort. Try and make a game targeted at the mature audience outside of Resident Evil.

What's with the gold tint? You can see in these screens though, that's it a visual step up from the first NSMB.

edit: Alright I see the pic...I'm thinking hard if this was included in the article five minutes ago. I'm sorry for just reading the article and not paying too much attention to the pictures. I know that's how everyone reads the magazine right?

Absolutely no surprise. Mario's the golden boy for every Nintendo system. I really wish that Nintendo had a trophy/achievement system, but I'll be playing this for sure.
