Atlus Picks Up Dragon's Crown

ATLUS said today it acquired the North American and Japan publishing rights for Vanillaware's 2D side-scrolling action RPG Dragon's Crown.

Publishing rights for the game were previously owned by UTV Ignition. ATLUS is now assisting Vanillaware on the game's development and will publish it sometime in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

"It’s still way too early in development to be talking about specifics, but we can say that the game simply cannot retail for $29.99," ATLUS PR manager Aram Jabbari said on the PlayStation Blog.

"We don’t know where that price point came from, but it is a logistical impossibility. We’re all gamers and we all wished it could be so, but it would have essentially destroyed any chance for profitability."

Dragon's Crown was originally set for release later this year.

UTV Ignition released the following statement:

“While we are saddened to no longer be associated with the Dragon’s Crown project, we are very confident that the title is in excellent hands with Atlus,” stated Lokesh Dhar, senior vice president of UTV Ignition Entertainment.

“Since the initial announcement, information on timing and features in the game have changed and other details regarding design and functionality are yet to be determined. We are confident that Atlus and Vanillaware will deliver the finest game possible.”

  • man I really was looking forward to play this year

  • Good!!! One less thing to worry about

  • Did you see those cool shoes the mage character had?

    Neither has she...
  • boobs.... perfect GI 10 score.....nuff said...
  • so it takes 2 years to make a 2d game? come on, i wanted this game in 2012 since it was announced last year...it is my most wanted for ps3

  • It's strange that UTV Ignition Entertainment let go of Dragon's Crown but I'm not complaining, at least the game was picked up by another company. I hope with Vanillaware working with Atlus, the game is even more awesome then it was before.

  • AKA "We see huge promise in this title, so let's buy it and flip it for more monies."

  • I think that Atlus is the right company to pick up this IP. I am really hoping that Dragon's Crown is a good game. I am really looking forward to it!

  • Ugh. This game sounds legit... its just its for the wrong systems. It should be for 3ds.

  • Thank you Atlus. This was one of the games I had been looking forward to playing. I loved the D&D arcade games and Dragon's Crown reminds me (graphic wise) of those games.

  • If I remember correctly, Vanillaware was started by ex Atlus employee's. Seems funny that their third game is being published by Atlus. Must feel a little awkward for Vanillaware.

Now finish this game and publish it *impatient gamer glare*

  • This is great news. I recall about a month ago they were talking possibly canceling this masterpiece. Vanillaware doesn't make bad games.

  • I loved Muramasa, and I'd really be excited for this game, but I just can't get past the RIDICULOUS depiction of female anatomy.  Everything else about the art style just blows me away.  I totally respect Vanillaware.  Some of their stuff just isn't for me.

  • I can't wait to get my hands on this, I loved Odin Sphere.
  • PS3 and Vita? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • First Ruin (or whatever its called now) and now this revealing dev. problems?  Perhaps Sony is pushing their Vita developers too hard in their pursuit to prove the system's relevance in the market.  Not that I'm damning their system, I'm looking forward to buying one sometime in the future, but with it being so young its disheartening to hear news like this.

  • I pray for Dragon's Crown & Vanillaware to be ok... :'( I'm heavily eyeballing this game!

!!! I just tried going to their Home Site ( http://dragons-crown.com/na/ ) & it seems to be gone!!! I've been worried about it never Updating, & now it's totally blown up to boot!!?
  • well mebe if it was a digital only release, then that might help keep the cost down a bit. I do not want to pay full ps3 prices for handheld games, final. Games cost a hell of a lot more here in NZ than they do in the US. But playstation IS starved for decent rpg fare, Vita being starved for ANY decent fare at all to date... As long as the game stays around the US$40 mark then I will happily purchase it
  • is this game some sequel to odin sphere???
