Prey 2 Delayed Out Of 2012

A scare went around last month with the rumor that Prey 2 had been cancelled. Thankfully that is not the case, but lots of work still needs to be done on the game, which Bethesda is delaying indefinitely.

This morning, Bethesda's PR department sent out this frank comment on the delay of the game and its development so far:

Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

Sounds like a good decision.

  • Delaying the game so that they can make it better is fine by me

  • The glitches apparently do not meet Bethesdas "high quality standards".

    Good one guys!

  • Glad it's not canceled and delaying it is fine. Just please release it before this console generation is over!

  • Let's name ZeniMax one of the best companies in America. These guys actually care about their customers.

  • Well at least it wasn't cancelled.

  • "We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule." But they WILL release titles [Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim] where the majority of the players [not myself] encounter game breaking glitches.
  • When will this finally come out?

  • Now they just need to change the name... Prey isn't the kind of game deserving of sequels... just make it a new universe.
  • Yeah... Part of me is disappointed but reading this is consoling.

Honestly tho, stereotypical aboriginal characters in games are so common that I actually hate it when people put us in their games. Still, prey didn't do a bad job. Sure he was an old turok concept sketch, but that's still a thousand miles better than "night hawk"

now he's just an npc? Meh. Prey 2's delay is just another subtle disappointment.

  • At least they are focused on finishing the game rather than selling an unfinished product.  I'm still holding a grudge against Obsidian for cutting out a portion of KOTOR II to meet a release date.

  • Thank you so much. I was about to die.

  • Darn it. Well, at least it wasn't cancelled.

  • What quality standards? I thought as long as the game got as far as the title screen, that was good enough for Bethesda. I don't know if people should rejoice, having the game moved out of 2012 "indefinitely" is not a good sign. This game still may never see the light of day.

  • dont pull a brink. dont pull a brink. dont pull a brink. *continues indefinitely*

  • A delay is better than a cancelation.

  • A delay is better than a cancelation.

  • this really unfort has the "will not see the light of day" written between the lines. They'll likely pull the code/source engine from it for future projects..but IMO best we can hope for is another studio picking it up to finish the game..

  • Yes! I was looking forward to trying this game out, and now I can!

  • Hell yea! More developers need to start thinking like this. Can't wait till this game comes out.

  • Not to troll but...as much as I love Skyrim and Fallout, am I the only one that laughs when hearing "Bethesda" and "quality control" in the same sentence?
