Man Sues Ubisoft Over Assassin’s Creed Story

John Beiswenger, author of "Link," has taken Ubisoft to court over claims the publisher lifted story ideas from his novel to create the Assassin's Creed universe.

The complaint, which was filed earlier this week in a Pennsylvania court, outlines many of the similarities between the book and the game. In "Link," the plot introduces the conception and creation "of a device and process whereby ancestral memories can be accessed, recalled, relived, and re-experienced by the user."

Both also include spiritual and religious tones, assassinations, and characters experiencing historical events through their ancestors’ memories. "Ubisoft have directly copied, and directly and contributorily infringed on the whole of Plaintiff’s copyrighted work," the lawsuit claims. "Link" was first published in 2003.

Beiswenger is seeking 1.05 million in damages and up to $5.25 million if the judge rules Ubisoft knowingly infringed on the copyright, in addition to halting the release of Assassin's Creed III and related products.

Ubisoft said it does not comment on ongoing litigation.

The complaint in PDF form can be read here.

  • You know how many stories are similar? A lot....this guy obviously needs money...and if he halts the release of AC3...he will be facing a lot of pissed off people!
Edit: After Googling the book...it does have an illustration on the front cover that looks a bit like the piece of eden. This still better not stop the game from being released...I already pre-ordered and paid it off. Here is a link to the books info...http://www.johnbeiswenger.com/author/link.htm
  • but but.. I wanted to play as a native american with my tomahawk :(
  • I wonder when his novel was published...
About five years after the first AC game, methinks.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Just found the relevant section in the pdf. Book was published four years prior to first AC game.
  • Lets hope this doesn't effect AC III,really looking forward to it.
  • Lets hope this doesn't effect AC III,really looking forward to it.

  • And it took him THIS long to realize this? After four releases since 2007?

EDIT: And i cannot find said novel on Google.
  • Asking for $$$ is fair if the story was copied, but asking for the game to be halted as well is kind of a Dick move.

I get why he would want it halted, but still if this goes through it'll be sad times.
  • FINALLY!!!!! WHERE IS THE "ARTISTIC INTEGRITY" NOW B*TCHES?!?!!!
  • This will only hold up if he actually wrote the book before the first Assassins Creed was made.

EDIT: Sorry while reading it I didn't notice it mentioned the date that the book was published.
  • Seems like an unsuccessful writer is trying to get his pay day. I feel like it would be really hard to sue someone for stealing an 'idea'. Ideas can have many forms and are usually formed from other ideas. Unless the author can pull specific examples from his book that Ubisoft used in their games, I don't see the judge ruling in his favor.
  • I find it suspicious that he waited this long to come forward with the claims in his lawsuit. I mean, maybe if he did so back when the first game came out but now there's been not one but four major releases from the AC franchise (AC 1 and 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations). I'd also like to see when exactly his book was published. If it was published at any point after the first game I say no dice. And if his lawsuit does end up delaying AC 3 I can only imagine the amount of hate-mail this guy will receive.
  • Why didn't he sue them after the first one instead of waiting 3 more games... I hope someone sues this guy for attempting to delay AC:III
  • Of all the copyright infringement claims flying around, this one seems slightly more credible.
  • This is just an excuse for publicity for his book.
  • This is just an excuse for publicity for his book.
  • I hope Ubisoft didn't copy another person's ideas but if they did, they need to admit to it and pay for what they done without halting the release of Assassin's Creed 3.
  • Really? What damage? Why can´t people create stuff and let everyone enjoy what if ubisoft took some ideas from it. In that case tomb raider creators should sue uncharted ones, those FPS shooters that are all the same should sue each other too...
  • Even if they did, you cannot copyright ideas. As an author, he should know copyright law.
  • I swear to god, if this affects the release of Assassin's Creed III in any way, I'm going to smack a b*tch. And seriously, if Ubisoft "copied" his novel, wouldn't he have brought this to court after the FIRST GAME was released? Seems to me like his book was *** and he's just looking to get some money out of it by f*cking with Ubisoft over stupid allegations.
  • well assassins we have our first contract
