God Of War: Ascension Revealed

Update: Sony has officially announced God of War: Ascension, and the company is promising more details very soon.

Sony's official PlayStation Blog and the game's Facebook page will feature a live streaming event on April 30, at 10 AM central time that promises more info on the game, including a Q&A with game director Todd Pappy from Sony Santa Monica. Head over to the official blog for more details on how you can participate.

----------------

Original Story: It seems Amazon jumped the gun with Sony's suspected God of War reveal by publishing the game's product page a day early.

God of War: Ascension for PlayStation 3 seems to be a prequel to the original trilogy, before Kratos became the Ghost of Sparta. Not much else is known about the story, however. The listing notes, "Join Kratos as he seeks freedom, redemption, and the clarity to avenge his family in the most ambitious God of War adventure in the series so far."

The product page, which is active at the time of this publishing, also contains a short CG teaser trailer. The listing indicates the game is out sometime in 2013, but no official release date has been revealed.

  • I am automatically on board on this one. God of War is the most brutal and action packed series of all.

  • It's a nice week for early leaks. Dead Space 3 & GOW Ascension ...I don't mind at all.

  • I wonder why Sony is making all these big title announcements now and not at E3. At this rate, their presentation is gonna suck.
  • My guess is that their gonna do what microsoft did with halo. do a couple spin offs and then deliver god of war IV.
  • not impressed....hahaha who am i kidding, I'm freakin' stoked already!!! :)

  • A prequel?

hmm.. I don't know about that choice.

Why not take that GoW format and introduce a new character and a new set of gods which would naturally entail changing gameplay and game mechanics in relevant and interesting ways?

I am sure the game will be good, but I hope they don't think Kratos can't wear out his welcome.

  • Cause errbody loves sequels. Also, didn't they already make 2 or 3 prequels already? It seems that they ran outta ideas and are just milking the franchise for more money.
  • SO LOOKING FORWARD TO IT

  • I'm actually...mildly disappointed. This is not what I was hoping for at all. I felt that "Ghost of Sparta" was a good enough prequel tale to the rest of the series, I honestly don't see how playing as Kratos before he became the Ghost of Sparta is ever going to top the crazily epic finale that was God of War 3. I'm hoping to be wrong on this one, but as of now I kind of wished it was going to be something new.

It also sort of goes back to one of the problems with the Star Wars prequels; we don't need to know how Darth Vader became Darth Vader, we just need to know that he's Darth Vader. The same goes for Kratos. We already know enough of his backstory to realize he's ridiculously awesome and scarily brutal. Do we really need to play through his time as a Spartan general before he becomes the avatar of vengeance we all know and love?
  • I likey, I might buy this just for these two reason's 1) Hedi from NCIS LA is the narrator. and 2) I just want to beat the crud out of stuff.

  • As long as it's a prequel, then we are all good. I was afraid it was a continuation. Cool.

  • WOOHOO! im loving this!

  • I have to say, I'm a little disappointed here. I was expecting either a sequel continuing Krato's story or a sequel with a new protagonist, not a prequel. I'm still going to play God Of War: Ascension but as I said, finding out that this new title is a prequel is definitely a disappointment.

  • Its not really a day late . . . its been the 19th for 16 hours :P
I'm sure Sony can't sue Amazon as it is technically the 19th in New Zealand. And half the world.
And whats wrong with more GoW? I'm sure they will create something truly amazing that will allow a GoWIV to be created. I dont care if the series is bled dry as I'm still happy to play GoW I and II on my ps2 and GoWIII . . .
  • So Kratos isn't going to be a god this time around? What? So we're just going to be playing Kratos "The Guy"?! Might as well play Batman when he was ten and Solid Snake when he was just a fetus. . .
  • The video sort of confuses me. The woman is talking like this game is set before he becomes the Ghost of Sparta, and yet, the whole trailer shows him bound in blood/chains. So what's going on here?

  • "Most Ambitious"? I'm curious how it's ambitious, because before the first game, Kratos is just a man--a general of Sparta's forces, dedicated to Aries, but still a guy. He doesn't even have the chained-swords yet. It could still be a pretty interesting adventure--we are still in the realm of greek lore, after all.
  • Kinda disappointed its not a sequel, but glad we're getting a new gow game.

    The box art looks good

  • Kratos is a general so maybe in this game we will be able to have team-mates, co-op etc. Thats certainly ambitious. When Kratos is a god it doesn't make sense to have co-op but since its a preqeal its totally possible.
We will see the battle where Kratos kills the Barbarian King among other victories. This will be awesome. Oh, and time travel. They will probably link it to GoW4 somehow through a time traveling Kratos or soemthing as well. Kratos from the future teaming up with his past selves/altering history to stop him from killing his family, the only way of saving his soul and the destruction of the world? This game will be awesome. I dont care what you people say. :p
  • Hell yea! I hope they do a cool promotion for pre ordering it like mabe a free voucher to download God of war 1 and 2 or Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. If not included in the preorder mabe in a limited addition version. CAN'T WAIT!
