Rumor: Apple Game Console In 2012

Apple could be creating its own game console for this year if a recent rumor is correct.

Website cultofmac.com says that its sources say that Apple plans to release its own TV set in 2012 with "an iTunes-integrated touchscreen remote and Siri-like voice command technology." This TV will also come with a video-game console whose interface relies on touch and Kinect-like motion controls.

Whether this has anything to do with Apple CEO Tim Cook's recent visit to Valve, Steam on this Apple console, or if it's related to Valve's own console dreams is unknown.

  • The console will come in two packages. The first is regular for $morethenyoureworth, and the second will come with 7G and will be priced $Yourefirstbornandsecondborn

  • it would be cool to see i guess....u know if they did show it at e3 this year everybody would be pumped...i love seeing new tech even if i dont want it

  • I can see Apple dethroning the competition besides Microsoft. I am sure they can acquire exclusive partnerships like Microsoft did when they first started. If there is hate going around, don't forget that the XBox had a lot of speculation and doubt before they released their console. Probably put Sony in its place and actually listen to the consumers over with feedback and more.

  • COnsidering that Tim Cook visted Valve, you could certainly be in the mixing for something simply earth shattering. WHile we dream of an actual portal gun, the crazy weight-loss goo from Aperture Science, androids, turrets, a gravity gun, or hell, the digitize transport lazer cannon from Tron, it seems likely itll be a console. But knowing the awesomness of both Valve and Apple, there is one thing that is all but certain........ Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will be wiped out with one swift stroke......
  • Im a Microsoft man myself

  • This will not be the Valve console. Why you ask? because Valve was created for the PC market - PC gaming is all about upgrading your hardware for the next big game and Apple computers do not let you upgrade your hardware without voiding the warrenty. The console will be outdated as far as PC gaming is concerned as soon as it comes out. Sure maybe Steam will be on it, but the newest games will not.  Also, I am not sure other devs will be willing to develop for a fourth console, that perhaps only a few people who play games other then iOS games will own this.  Paying above $500 for a console that I can play Angry Birds on, I think not.

  • How Apple of them, you cant just buy the console, you have to buy the tv\console combo. Please keep your half assed games on the iphone\ipad where they belong

The second big videogame crash is coming...sooner then you think
  • Will this mean one- or two-year console cycles from now on?
  • i doubt valve is that interested in a motion based game console, apple was probably meeting to discuss whatever deal they might be striking up to distribute ios games through their steam service, so that steam users can finally download the angry birds games that they crave.

  • A newcomer to the console wars. If correct, let's see what they can do.

  • A retina display tv would look fantastic!!!

  • Well... I hope not.

  • Oh joy...how long with this console last? Because I doubt a Mac will last long enough to make a difference. Though isn't their iPad2 already a gaming console already? Why do they want to enter the market???

  • That's cool so now they can sue the gaming world for "stolen IP". God I hate this company and the crappy products that they put out. I like to customize my products a little past just adding folders and wallpapers to things. Plus the osX UI is awful and annoying to maneuver. Your products are way overpriced for what ends up being Frankenstein's Monster devices where each device has at least 20 different manufactures contributing to it since you (Apple) can't make anything yourself.

  • Sony's "599 US Dollars" won't seem as absurd when he hear: "The best part is its affordable. Everyone is going to want an iSuck, so we're making them affordable for everyone. iSuck will launch with a retail price of $999."
  • Not intrested , so Fk off tim/apple.

  • I wouldn't buy it for anything, I know I am in an extreme minority here but outside of the iPod I am not overly impressed with anything that Apple has come out with and most of their products, excluding the iPod have lost their competitive edge with competitors when you add in the price point.

Personal preference I suppose, but I will stick with Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and Valve if they ever made their own.

  • Both Valve and Apple have implemented ideas that have dramatically changed the industry, so if this rumour lines up with their reported visit to Gabe Newell HQ, I can see a very exciting future in such a partnership.  It also makes sense since Apple has extensive expertise with hardware, an area Valve would have to catch up on if they truly are making this 'Steambox'.

  • OH SNAP! Its gonna be like apple TV only its gonna stream Steam games!!!!!!!!!

  • People need to stop supporting apple products so much. Sure, they're fine pieces of tech but they are so ridiculously overpriced. If this ends up outselling ANY of the consoles I'm giving up on the world entirely.
