Super Mario Bros. Wii U At E3

Update: A Nintendo of America spokesperson clarified Miyamoto's comments saying the new game is based off of last year's tech demo. Below is the company's statement sent to Game Informer:

In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year's E3 Expo. We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.

Nintendo today confirmed it will show off a new Super Mario Bros. title for the Wii U at E3 this June.

The news originally surfaced from an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, where designer Shigeru Miyamoto allegedly said there will be a new Super Mario title at E3. Nintendo later confirmed the news in a statement sent to Eurogamer.

"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," a Nintendo spokesperson said. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."

E3 kicks off on June 5, 2012 in Los Angeles.

Comments
  • Mario moves systems. If Nintendo wants WiiU to start off strong, this is a no-brainer. can't wait to hear more.

  • I heard that it is the game they showed last E3, Super Mario Bros. Mii

  • Guns. That's the only possible next step.

  • Mario in HD? Me Gusta

  • I wish I could go to E3... :(

  • I'm predicting it'll be Super Mario Bros. 4

  • The first reason I've had to be genuinly exited for the Wii U.

  • doesnt look like anything new....just New Super Mario Bros with Mii's.....
  • Wait, the Wii U is supposed to be something like twice as powerful as the 360, and the game looks like that? I understand art style, but I did expect a little... More, in terms of definition of graphic fidelity and stuff. Hmm, maybe it will look better upon release.
  • I knew it. I posted that prediction on IGN and people we're arguing with me.
  • Sweet, I can't wait to see what it's all about.

  • good to see that one of their first games will take full advantage of WiiU's graphical prowess. Just die Nintendo, Just Die.
  • Mod
Maybe it was a bit too much to expect a proper Mario to be shown so soon. Maybe it still will be and is being kept under a super lock & key. This makes sense though because it'll print money like crazy. Though i have to say if this was supported with online co-op, I'd be very interested.
  • Comes as no surprise, I have been expecting them to announce that as a full game since they showed it last E3.

  • They better have online or change it majorly. As much as I liked New Super Mario Brothers I want something more then an enhanced edition.

Of course how much of it is based off of the tech demo remains to be seen.

  • How unpredictable!

  • Well in that case, this had better be a pack in game.

  • Got to have Mario with a Nintendo console!

  • I love Mario Bros but the Mii thing... http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

I still will always love Mario Bros! Good Luck

  • There is no reason that this should be on the wii U, this game is clearly possible on the Wii. I'm not buying a wii U just for another 2d mario game. How can nintendo sell this for $50 when there are xbla and psn games that are more impressive for $10. Fez is a great recent example of this. And they expect me to buy a $300 dollar system for this? Hopefully, they give you this with the Wii U.
