Reader Discussion: Which Classic Series Should Return To 2D?

Nintendo’s recent Super Mario Bros. 4 web domain registry has a lot of fans excited. A return to the classic numbering convention is leading some to believe this new Mario game could be an even more traditionally 2D platformer than New Super Mario Bros. Wii. At the same time, Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on the record saying he’d love to see a remake or new Zelda game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. All this talk of returning to series’ roots has us wondering: What Nintendo franchise, or any other for that matter, would you like see return to 2D?

Metroid fans have been clamoring for a true Super Metroid-style sequel for years. The Earthbound series also has a loyal following who would die if a new entry in the series was announced. Kid Icarus: Uprising recently hit the 3DS in with a new behind-the-back third-person perspective, but maybe you’d like to see a hard-as-nails return to Pit’s NES days. Maybe you're also in the mood for some more Ghosts 'n Goblins or a throwback to the glory days of side-scrolling Castlevania?

Sound off of in the comments below on a classic Nintendo series you’d like to see a new 2D entry for.

  • I want Quackshot 2!
  • I've got to go with Metroid. I loved Prime and the sequels, but I liked the 2D ones more.
  • I like 3D better. Also, I don't care that I'm first.
EDIT: Make that third. Just saying, this was meant to show being first isn't that important. However, speaking of which, I did like New Super Mario Bros. I wouldn't mind one of those again, but that's already happened. 2D Zelda or Metroid? Not something I'd hope for; I don't mind them in 2D, but I prefer 3D for those, unlike Mario.
  • I would definitely be up for a Zelda title that goes back to the style of Link to the Past. That game is personally one of my favorite Zelda games. Also I've never played Super Metroid, so that would be a pretty cool way to go back to the series.
  • Metroid for sure. Nothing was better than Metroid's exploration and puzzles. If you asked me in 2009 it would have been Castlevania though.
  • I'd love to see Metroid back in 2D. However, I would love to see a new Yoshi. We just got the Other M, and it was decent enough to hold me over on Metroid for at least a little. I remember obsessively playing Yoshi's Island on my GBA when I was younger. I'd also love to see another Kirby. Epic Yarn was great, but I had Nightmare in Dreamland when I was young, and I want to see the whole "sucking-up-taking-powers" aspect again.
  • Fallout :)

After getting that off my chest (whew!) I can certainly say this: it's strange that Mario is the only franchise that continually has a sidescrolling entry in the series. I guess I greatly preferred the 2D Zelda's, which isn't to say the 3D weren't good as well. Someone else commented they'd like a Yoshi game and that'd be pretty awesome. I have I think two Yoshi islands for GBA, which I don't exactly have the capability to play these days.

I never got a chance to play Mother(s) or Earthbound, so a remake of that, or port as it were, would be nice. The same with Super Metroid.
  • A true Super Metroid-style sequel? You mean like Metroid Fusion? Also, maybe that's why Nintendo won't touch the Earthbound/Mother series. They just don't want to kill off a bunch of their fans. Yes... yes it must be.
  • METROID- That is all.

    Also, maybe Final Fantasy too.

  • I'd love to see a 2D Metroid, Earthbound, or Final Fantasy. Another Donkey Kong Country would be grand as well. DKCR was fantastic!
  • I want to see Super Mario World 2. I haven't liked a 2D mario game since Mario World. And yes, Yoshi's Island was fun, but it simply wasn't a Mario World game.
  • Blaster Master, Castlevania (Cause they proven 2D is better than 3D for this series), Double Dragon.
  • Castlevania, Metroid, a remake of the NES Pirates. Ummmmmm...
CHRONO TRIGGER! CHRONO TRIGGER! CHRONO TRIGGER!
  • anything like super metroid would be absolutely amazing.

  • Maybe Contra? Or something like Quack Shot?

A Mario 4 I think would be great, if it's what we think it is. And something in the style of the old 16-bit RPGs would be great (but the graphics could be more hi-res vector-like since the pixels weren't what made those games great). Secret of Evermore, for instance, was a ton of fun if only because it was pretty different from the standard RPG of the time, much in the way Chrono Trigger was also different.

And speaking of which, a true Chrono Trigger 2 would be great in 2D form as well.

  • A hand-drawn, Metroidvania iteration of Mega Man. Your move Capcom.
  • Sonic, and Metroid especially Sonic.
  • Honestly, none of those. I can't think of any that haven't actually gotten better in 3D.
  • I'd like to see another 2D Duke Nukem game actually. But I'd also like to see Doom go back to it's roots with a game like the first two, but that ain't gonna happen.

  • I just want Nintendo to re-make or make a sequal to Donky Kong 64!!!! That was my all-time favorite game on the N64
