Reader Discussion: Which Classic Series Should Return To 2D?

Nintendo’s recent Super Mario Bros. 4 web domain registry has a lot of fans excited. A return to the classic numbering convention is leading some to believe this new Mario game could be an even more traditionally 2D platformer than New Super Mario Bros. Wii. At the same time, Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on the record saying he’d love to see a remake or new Zelda game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. All this talk of returning to series’ roots has us wondering: What Nintendo franchise, or any other for that matter, would you like see return to 2D?

Metroid fans have been clamoring for a true Super Metroid-style sequel for years. The Earthbound series also has a loyal following who would die if a new entry in the series was announced. Kid Icarus: Uprising recently hit the 3DS in with a new behind-the-back third-person perspective, but maybe you’d like to see a hard-as-nails return to Pit’s NES days. Maybe you're also in the mood for some more Ghosts 'n Goblins or a throwback to the glory days of side-scrolling Castlevania?

Sound off of in the comments below on a classic Nintendo series you’d like to see a new 2D entry for.

  • I would love for the Metroid series to go back to 2d.

  • Duck Hunt.

  • Metroid. Without a doubt, Metroid.

  • Legend of Zelda. Anything like "Link to the past" or "Oracle of Ages".

  • Metroid.

  • earth bound nintendo is too lazy to fight for the rights for the pop-clutre refences so i want to play a mother game before i die

  • any of these suggestions would get money out of me

  • I really like the Legend of Zelda top down games like minish cap and link to the past they are a lot of fun, and i am better at those ones than the 3d ones haha

  • would love to see a new river city ransom
  • I've got 2 answers.

    1.) Streets of Rage

    2.) Final Fantasy

  • I believe the answer is that picture.

  • Metroid 2d was my favorite game as a kid. Hd remake and coop please.

  • I'm definitely on the metroid and castlevania bandwagon here.  With metroid I've only played the 2D versions,(no GC or WII, means no prime) so i can't speak to the 3D games but i don't get why companies tend to go one way or the other with this stuff.  Both can coexist, cross-promote, whatever.  2D Castlevania is beautiful (and I'm not talking about that multiplayer garbage),  but 3D Vania still has a place in gaming.  I really enjoyed the latest 3D version and can't wait to play the sequel, however if both games were gifted to my ps3 I'm diving into the 2D first.

  • Personally, I want Metroid to continue in 3D. We know it can well in that area and I'd like to see it push the space to it's limits. I actually am getting my answer to this question this fall: I'm soooo looking forward to Epic Mickey 2 on 3DS- it looks like a long lost SNES game.

  • Yeah Metroid.  Whether it's on the 3DS, or better yet the Wii U, I'd love to see a new 2D version.

  • Deff Metroid

  • i think it would be cool to see a new Ice Climbers...
  • Metroid. It has been far too long since it's 2D days. Maybe Mario and Zelda. Might as well throw Battletoads in there.
  • THE GUARDIAN LEGEND!  Although it had no 3d sequel ( or 2d for that matter) i spent many hours trying to beat some of the levels. I still fire up my NES every so often just to play it!

  • Zelda. Sometimes I bust out my original GB to play along with the original Tetris, Kerby, and Super Mario Bros World. Would die to get a 2D Zelda for my DS, but then I wouldn't be able to play it. I doubt they will make my dreams because the newest handheld is for 3D gaming.
