The lights are on
Nintendo’s recent Super Mario Bros. 4 web domain registry has a lot of fans excited. A return to the classic numbering convention is leading some to believe this new Mario game could be an even more traditionally 2D platformer than New Super Mario Bros. Wii. At the same time, Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on the record saying he’d love to see a remake or new Zelda game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. All this talk of returning to series’ roots has us wondering: What Nintendo franchise, or any other for that matter, would you like see return to 2D?
Metroid fans have been clamoring for a true Super Metroid-style sequel for years. The Earthbound series also has a loyal following who would die if a new entry in the series was announced. Kid Icarus: Uprising recently hit the 3DS in with a new behind-the-back third-person perspective, but maybe you’d like to see a hard-as-nails return to Pit’s NES days. Maybe you're also in the mood for some more Ghosts 'n Goblins or a throwback to the glory days of side-scrolling Castlevania?
Sound off of in the comments below on a classic Nintendo series you’d like to see a new 2D entry for.

Super Metroid and Castlevania
Contra, dude, even though it's not Nintendo and they don't make them anymore
I would buy a new console just to play a new 2D Metroid.
2D Metroid in 3D!
Sonic the Hedgehog. I stopped remembering them when it moved to 3D.
Castlevania. Should always stay 2D, and theres nothing wrong with staying 2D just because we have the ability for 3D.
all of them
Final - MuthaF'n - Fantasy
Like many other people, I'd want a really good 2d metroid. I am a big fan of the 1st ninja gaiden game and so I would welcome a 2d ninja gaiden game. Oh, and earthbound.
METROID METROID METROID METROIDMETROIDMETROID!!!!! Sorry, got a little passionate there.
I'm up for another Fusion-like Metroid.
And Castlevania needs to return to 2D. Again.
Sonic should have stayed there.
Super Metroid with Super Metroid controls. Not the gimped Fusion ***. I want to be able to mock ball, single walled wall jumps, be able to sequence break and all of that fun stuff!
Uuuummm Thats kinda a hard choice but I would have to say metroid, and ninja gaiden. And in this day and age if your going to make a 2D game put in some eye candy. Make the visuals flashy.
Except for metroid. Keep it dark and grainy like super metroid was.
I don't think Shigesato Itoi is ever going to make a Mother 4 sadly
Contra and mega-man
