The lights are on
Nintendo’s recent Super Mario Bros. 4 web domain registry has a lot of fans excited. A return to the classic numbering convention is leading some to believe this new Mario game could be an even more traditionally 2D platformer than New Super Mario Bros. Wii. At the same time, Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on the record saying he’d love to see a remake or new Zelda game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. All this talk of returning to series’ roots has us wondering: What Nintendo franchise, or any other for that matter, would you like see return to 2D?
Metroid fans have been clamoring for a true Super Metroid-style sequel for years. The Earthbound series also has a loyal following who would die if a new entry in the series was announced. Kid Icarus: Uprising recently hit the 3DS in with a new behind-the-back third-person perspective, but maybe you’d like to see a hard-as-nails return to Pit’s NES days. Maybe you're also in the mood for some more Ghosts 'n Goblins or a throwback to the glory days of side-scrolling Castlevania?
Sound off of in the comments below on a classic Nintendo series you’d like to see a new 2D entry for.

I would love nothing more than a new entry in the Yoshi's Island series. I loved Super Mario World 2, and while Yoshi's Island DS isn't as bad as people remember, it's definitely what I wanted from a sequel. Nintendo is so innovative with things current Mario games, always giving you a new toy or ability in a level to completely change the dynamic of the game, and that all started with SMW2.
Imagine a new entry on the 3DS with the crayon graphics of the original, but in different dimensional planes. And with proper stylus controls, aiming would be much more intuitive.
Def Super Metroid 2...would play that non-stop for weeks, years even. It would be cool to see Earthbound too :)
a game called legacy of the wizard. great 2-D side-scrolling rpg. back before nintendo was taking all the crosses out of thier games.
I would love Yoshi and Donkey Kong brought to 2d!
Metroid
Castlevania.
Honestly, who would not want to play a new Final Fantasy game done with sexy 2d sprites! Something along the lines of being awesome, like FF3.
Count me in as someone whose head would absolutely explode if a new Earthbound was announced.
MEGAMAN!!!!
ghosts n goblins, earthbound, both as you mentioned, would be awesome. i think castlevania is doing well in 3-d with the newest one.
its not technically a classic nintendo series but i think a NEW 2d final fantasy would be amazing. they'd lose all the modern fans though.
Sonic for sure. And metroid
I'd like to see Rygar and Ninja Gaiden in 2D again. Oh & a new Zombies Ate My Neighbors would be cool.
all of them, and not that annoying 2D/3D nonsense of New Super Mario Bros, or Castlevania Rondo of Blood, or the Megaman games for the PSP. I want beautiful and vibrant sprites a la Rayman Origins, that game was perfect and all classic games could benefit from that treatment. While we're at it can Konami bring back a respectable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat-em-up game for this generation, or any classic beat-em-ups for that matter what happened to them? How does Sonic survive, yet Battle Toads doesn't,or any of the great Capcom Beat-em-Ups that they had for the arcades, I'd love some new Strider.
Symphony of the Night is my favorite game, and Castlevania has found repeated success using that formula on mobile platforms. I want a new side scrolling Castlevania, fully orchestrated, with all of the freakin' bells and whistles the current generation could provide a game like that. Think of it!!! A massive spellbook, a Mary Poppins sized bag of weapons and goodies, mega huge boss battles, TONS of secret walls filled with all of the impossibly preserved meat you could ever want, optional followers (opening up new team attacks and so forth), multiple endings....good lord the list goes on. I have speculated about the possibilities for years. I want it so hard.
