Mass Effect 3 Leads March Sales

Research firm NPD revealed March video game sales results for the U.S. Total video game sales declined 25 percent year-over-year from $1.47 billion to $1.1 billion.

On the hardware side, Microsoft led console sales with 371,000 units sold. Nintendo and Sony have not announced hardware numbers at this time.

“The Xbox 360 is the best-selling console system for the last 15, and the best-selling hardware platform overall for the past 8 months," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

On the software side, Electronic Arts' Mass Effect 3 unsurprisingly took the top spot with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City coming in second with 582,000 units sold.

“Mass Effect 3 sold more than twice as much as did Mass Effect 2 during its introductory month in January 2010," Frazier added. "In a list of the top 10 SKU’s for the month (as opposed to top titles as listed here), 3DS Kids Icarus: Uprising would have been among the top selling individual SKU’s for the
month of March.”

Below are the top 10 games by units sold for the month of March:
  1. Mass Effect 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
  2. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (360, PS3)**
  3. MLB 12: The Show (PS3, PSV) 3 Sony (Corp)
  4. NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PC, PS2)
  5. SSX 2012 (360, PS3)
  6. Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3, 360)
  7. Mario Party 9 (Wii)
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)
  9. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja (360, PS3)
  10. Major League Baseball 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, NDS, PSP, PC, PS2)

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

NPD adds that Skylanders:  Spyro’s Adventure was the 15th best-selling title for the month.  The three character pack SKU’s were all among the top 10 accessory items for the month of March.

Comments
  • >Resident evil: Operation Raccoon City pleasant surprise.
  • Guess we all had to fight the Reapers.
  • How does Mario Party keep selling games?
  • is this really a surprise to anyone?
  • not for long amazon reviews state 2 stars and i cant even sell my own collectors editions. yes i bought many because i thought they were going to be good investments but too bad on my behalf.

anyone wanna buy unopened ME 3 collectors edition?
  • A huge game that came out in March led March sales? HOLY SH*T.
  • not surprising that it isn't but i wish tales of graces was on the list
  • Raccoon city is flawed in more ways than one. But I find myself drawn to the co-op.
  • Mass effect 3 owned the month of march!

  • Wow more sheep bought 360 in the month of march. Get a real console like the PS3!
  • "Modern Warfar"? Someone at the office must be having a bad day...
  • Eh, it was a pretty dry month.
  • In other shocking news, the sky is in fact blue.
  • Good to hear Kid Icarus did well. Despite the controls taking some getting used to they don't cripple the game experience or your hands once you get used to it. I think it is the most fun game I've bought in 2012. I love it. I think the GI review was harsh, no way does it drop below an 8.0

  • meh
  • What I'm shocked about is the fact that PS2 games are still being made AND sold.

  • I like both Mass Effect and Operation Raccoon City multiplayer.

  • Cod mw3. Sigh.

  • Of course it's leading. It's Mass Effect 3!

On another note, I'm surprised to see Modern Warfare 3 already at number 8. I would think that it'd still be at the No. 1 spot

  • no amount of "bad" endings could've stopped this!
