Lost Planet 3 Announced

Capcom today announced Lost Planet 3, due out for PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 early next year.

The third game uses Unreal Engine 3, and is being developed by Spark Unlimited, the team behind Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Call of Duty: Finest Hour, and Legendary. Here are the plot details:

Lost Planet 3 introduces Jim, a rig pilot who leaves Earth to take on a hazardous but lucrative contract on E.D.N. III. Working for Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) who are preparing the planet for colonization, Jim joins his fellow pioneers at the Coronis base and begins surveying the uncharted terrain and obtaining samples of the planet’s energy supply – Thermal Energy.

With NEVEC’s existing Thermal Energy reserve running low the fate of the Coronis mission depends on the natural source of the energy supply being located. Realizing that this is a great opportunity for a huge pay-off and early ticket home to his family, Jim braves the risk of the treacherous environment and threat of the indigenous Akrid. Acting as a home away from home and boasting an array of tools that can assist Jim on the field, the utility rig provides Jim’s safety and is essential for not only his contract work but also his protection against the ever-changing climate.

Posted below is the debut trailer.

  • weren't they rumored to be making Battlefront III? Well I guess that's that.

  • Capcom is really dishing out the trailers left and right this week.

  • I have always wanted these games to be held together with a good story, hopefully #3 gets it right.

  • I am definately going to buy this game.

  • if it in first person im in but its not going to be. oh well ill just play some bad CO

  • I might need to do some catching up for this. Looks cool

  • Now THAT looks GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Saweet!! I just hope the story of this one is actually intelligible this time around.

  • That trailer was legit!! I never really liked the first Lost Planet, maybe I should try the second one

  • Oh man! That trailer is sooo freaking legit!! CGI makes anything look beautiful!!

  • Hope this is better than Lost Planet 2...the story mode was too similar to online.

  • So I guess this means we're really NOT getting Battlefront 3.

  • I didn't hate Turning Point and Legendary: The Box like so many others. I always said that Spark could make a great game if someone would just give them the budget. Let's hope this is it. Though I have doubts about Capcoms ability to listen to fans.

Every single last complaint gamers had with Lost Planet, and I really mean every single last one, was completely ignored by Capcom when they made Lost Planet 2. We enjoyed the original, but there were some serious problems with it that everyone let Capcom know about.

And what does Capcom do with the sequel? Ignore everyone, release a sequel that keeps all of the same problems and creates brand new ones. Everyone I know, including me, hated Lost Planet 2 because of that. They didn't fix the overly long animations, the boss fights that take 30 minutes, the fact that you can get knocked down over and over again because it takes too long to get up, and the annoying "heat" mechanic.

There is so much more they didn't fix. All they did with Lost Planet 2 is turn it into Monster Hunter, which absolutely nobody asked for. And they went ahead and created new problems, like taking away the cool story and characters that people enjoyed from the first game and turned it into a generic wasteland of grunts.
  • Dude! It has gotta be freezing, wear a freakin' hat or you'll freeze your ears off

  • I'm excited to hear a new Lost Planet being announced.  However, I'm not excited about the protagonist.  He looks too much like Marcus Fenix.  The hair, facial hair, and big burly armor look like something out of Gears of War.  It just seems like they're trying too hard to make it appeal to those of us in the States.

I suppose I can forgive it, so long as it delivers on the monster hunting action I liked in the second game and sets a good tone in the campaign like the first.  Still, the design for the protagonist just bugs me.

  • *** YES!!!! ***!!! YES!!!

  • Hopefully the move to a US based studio - even if it IS the underwhelming Spark Unlimited - can fix Lost Planet's sh***y, "swimmy" aiming and lackluster online component. That being said, here's hoping a partnership with Capcom will help Spark Unlimited up their game significantly - they have been quiet for years, so this game shouldn't be rushed like the two shooters they did for Codemasters at the beginning of the generation. Here's hoping the story too is improved; working with western developers means dialogue and personalities that sound natural to us gamers in the western world. I'll admit, even in that trailer, I laughed at the "Oh, Come ON!" when he ran out of ammo and just threw his gun at the alien:)

Crossing my fingers this turns out awesome. The first two games were disappointments in completely different ways.

Shame they're not working on Battlefront III though. REALLY wanted that to materialize.
  • That was freaking cool, I need to play the second to understand whats going on.
