New Mechromancer Class, Character Customization Coming To Borderlands 2

During their PAX East panel today, members of Gearbox announced that Borderlands 2 will be adding a Mechromancer class and character customization to the massive shooter. Rather than a stock assortment of gear and costumes, players will have to earn their new wardrobes.

New gear, costume pieces, and even custom heads can be acquired by completing missions and challenges, as well as ranking up. In addition, players of the original Borderlands will immediately be rewarded with an exclusive head and skin.

The Mechromancer is yet to be developed, and will be made available as post-launch DLC. This female character seems to be a mix of human and machine, and can control a large robot known as D374-TP (Deathtrap). The character will be made available for free to those that pre-order the game. There is no ETA or pricing available for the Mechromancer yet, but Randy Pitchford said he hopes to price it at a level "comparable to most DLC." Also announced was a special edition of the game that will retail for $149.99, and comes packaged in a loot box from the game.

  • cant wait for this game
  • No like.... Bad Medicine
  • Well that's some interesting news. Loved the first game and this one is lOoling to be so much better. Hopefully it won't disappoint.
  • First! It looks like my maid.
  • Sweet! I love being able to customize my own characters. And new classes coming in DLC sounds pretty cool.
  • Even though it seems like day one DLC it sounds really cool.
  • mechromancer, i like it. definite potential for later play-throughs, but im gonna have to start off with the soldier or siren, havent completely decided yet...
  • controlling a robot is always awesome, and makeing players earn all the gear that comes with the DLC will add a few more hours of gameplay....which reminds me...I need to preorder this game.
  • post launch DLC? is it gonna be on the day DLC then or come a couple months after?
  • These limited edition copies are getting to be too expensive. $150? That's crazy! Yes, I will be purchasing it. Just like I did with Skyrim. /sigh
  • sweet. new classes are always welcome. and not to be off topic but wasent the Half Life Super Replay suopposed to come out today?
  • Have they said yet what is going to be in the special edition?
  • If im able to get a job over the summer, this special edition will definitely be pre-ordered. I always wanted one of those marcus bobbleheads!
  • I doubt it's gonna be day one DLC, it seems more like they're bringing it up more so to say that classes can be viable DLC and this is just one of the plans for classes they have.

Edit: I'm also glad there's gonna be a bit of customization, because I always enjoy looking different but wasn't really for the idea of armor being added to Borderlands. I'm betting they'll be bought with the bad ass points you get from challenges.
  • Seems cool, I'm not going to complain about added value to my game unless it's so bad it detracts from the overall experience. Glad I preordered.

  • An extra $90 for a box, bobblehead, and DLC character is crazy!
  • Even more classes plus character customization is going to be sweet. Weapons customization would also be real cool with all the gun parts in the game.
  • Neat. It'll be interesting to see how this Deathtrap will compare to the turret ability. The Deathtrap has more mobility but turret has more firepower?

  • Cool.
  • Great news. A Mechromancer class sounds awesome, but what I'm even more excited about is earning extra costumes for the new cast. Lack of character customization was probably my biggest complaint with the original.

On a side note, I'd buy the collector's edition if the bobblehead was of Claptrap. In my opinion, Marcus isn't worthy of the bobble-status, especially since that supposed worth is part of an overall $150 package.
