The lights are on
More and more rumors begin to surface as we move closer to E3 this coming June.
Earlier this year, reports from Kotaku said the next Xbox will use a Blu-ray drive and lock out used games to some extent. Other reports said the hardware will mirror a PowerPC CPU married to a modified ATI Southern Islands 7000 series GPU.
However, a source told MCV the next Xbox is foregoing an optical disc drive entirely and is set for launch next holiday. Additionally, reports from last month say the next PlayStation console is codenamed Orbis and is also coming next holiday.
Today, VG247 reports the next Xbox will not only use a Blu-ray drive, it also requires a constant internet connection as an anti-piracy measure. They also say Kinect will come standard with the console. The website additionally says Sony wants to launch the next PlayStation ahead of Microsoft's console.
“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” the source said. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”
As for the Wii U, Nintendo is set to re-debut the console this E3. The website WiiUDaily says it obtained an internal memo from a Japanese retailer that states a potential release date for the console is November 18, 2012.
The date, assuming it's real, would line up with Nintendo's other product release windows, including the original Wii, which launched on November 19, 2006.
Both Microsoft and Sony have publicly stated there are no plans to show off new hardware at E3 2012.
I'll just wait for E3 to come and get some real answers.
Meh I really hope they don't debut any new consoles at this E3, I think this generation of consoles still has some good life left in it. One of the only reasons I think either manufacturer would release a console post-haste would to commit more to their "total entertainment package" ethos and try to corner more of the market, ie Microsoft; and Sony wants to catch up. Nintendo is off doing it's own thing to some peoples dismay(I'm wary to say the least).
"Today, VG247 reports the next Xbox will not only use a Blu-ray drive, it also requires a constant internet connection as an anti-piracy measure."
I just saved $400+.
I hope they just keep supporting PS3 at the same time like they did PS2 for awhile.
But if you have a hobby with anything electronic, you should know you do need to upgrade every so often.
Cell phones, computers, TV's, Vcr-DVD-Blu-ray.
I like the fact that the next Xbox may have Blu-ray drive but I don't like the fact of having to have the console constantly connected to the internet. I also don't like that next generation consoles may be out late next year. I feel like that's just too soon. I feel the next generation consoles should come out mid to late 2014.
Why announce now? Why cant they just wait till E3 :(
Constant internet connection? That´s a good way to loose sales x) not everybody has internet, and I´m sure people will find a way to break that rule and play games offline and even pirate not because they don´t have money but because they don´t have internet or simply because those rules are stupid.Look at steam and origins for pc, they don´t stop piracy they just a useless software that annoys honest buyers.
What if a person stops having internet, will microsoft and sony give people´s money back? Hope this rumours aren´t true.
I hate what's happened to the industry after gaming went mainstream.
This is going to be a pain selling all of my games to get the new console and other stuff with it when the time comes
If next-gen consoles REQUIRE an Internet connection, then they're going to lock out a lot of solo gamers. What a Dick move. If that's true, I feel for those poor soulds without wi-fi.
