Square Enix Partnered With Google On 8-Bit Map

Google's April Fool's 8-bit map was filled with many Dragon Quest references and images. Square Enix said today it provided the assets for the project.

"It was a collaborative effort between Square Enix and Google," a U.S. representative told Game Informer. "Google came up with the idea, then we provided the assets and helped them to create the map."

Unfortunately, the publisher was unable to provide more detail, as the company's Japan headquarters did all the legwork.

Square Enix previously partnered with Google last year to bring Mini Ninjas to the Chrome browser.

  • Yes! Square Enix is a great developer, and, if they're working with Google to make Google Maps Quest, then it is going to be even better. Now, I really can't wait until this game gets released. It looks like a great game!
  • Google previously partnered with Google?
  • Looks like you have a typo there.

  • hope its free!

  • Wish I could see my town in 8 bit. Would be more interesting than the normal town.
  • so who had to pay who a million dollars for this?
  • I'm disappointed that it's no longer an option on Google Maps. I quite like the 8-bitness of it all.

  • Gods that was awesome! Saw it on the 31rst and assumed it was for real... way to go SE and google

  • That's why it said Square Enix in the corner...

  • Er... Square Enix is awesome and I would much prefer if they focused on making a Dragon Quest 3D game for the 3ds then play around with Google. I mean its cute what they came up with but I much prefer a 3d Dragon Quest game.
  • That was probably the best RPG to be published by Square Enix in years.

  • I wish google had left quest mode up and running for the rest of the year. I would have loved to have printed maps when I needed them and had a friend read the directions while driving. QUEST TIME

  • Now we need Capcom to make an, "if the world looked like Mega Man Legends 3," map.. it would either be bright, colorful and catchy... or a big dead and dark disappointment;(

  • Perhaps a modern cartridge port for the ancient consoles and handhelds, just for the heck of it?

  • This is so awesome, really cool idea.

  • That's pretty cool! I hope Square Enix and Google partner up more in the future.

  • Blowing into a cartridge to get the game to work... fond memories.
  • That's awesome!
