SimCity Requires Internet Connection, Won't Support Mods At Launch

by Jim Reilly on Mar 28, 2012 at 10:32 AM

New details about EA Maxis' newest SimCity are dripping out. The publisher confirmed that while the game can be purcahsed outside of Origin, its digital store, it will require a constant Internet connection.

Speaking to Joystiq, lead designer Stone Librande said players will need to be online on Origin while playing, even it the game was not purchased there.. He said the always-on connection becomes necessary for the game's regional and global multiplayer features.

As for mod support, Librande they won't be there at launch. "Right now we've got our work cut out for us to build the product up to the quality level it deserves as a SimCity," he said. "Then after we ship, we'll make decisions about how we can and when exactly we'll support mods.

"But it's worth pointing out that the reason people are still playing SimCity 4 almost ten years later is because the modding community essentially re-created it and filled it with new content and fixed bugs and made it as much of a hobby as it is a game.

"We're very cognizant of that -- we're not idiots."

SimCity hits PC in 2013.
