Rumor: The Next PlayStation Codenamed 'Orbis'

Next-generation console rumors continue to surface. This time there's new details on the next PlayStation console.

Reliable sources told Kotaku the console's current working name is Orbis and is set for release in holiday 2013. The console won't support backward compatibility for PlayStation 3 games, either.

Following reported rumors about the next Xbox not supporting used titles, the next PlayStation could link games to your PSN account and implement some sort of "online pass" feature, making used games buyers to be restricted on accessing full game content unless they pay a fee.

Keep in mind these are just rumors. Nothing is confirmed. Sony said it does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Earlier this month, retailer GameStop said it was unlikely that next-generation consoles would lock out used games completely. “We think it’s unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply hasn’t been proven to work," said CEO Paul Raines.

  • I just want to see if they can improve on the Dual Shock's design, or if we're going to have the same controller we've had for more than ten years.
  • The rummors are getting old. I aslo wish that the would make ps3 compatible for it if they aren't
  • How is a stick of gum going to play games, haha haha
  • Well of course the new consoles will make it harder to play used games, and almost certainly won't have backwards compadability. The gaming industry considers ever single used game sold as a lost sale, much the way they consider every pirated piece of software a lost sale. Of course, just like the piracy argument, that logic is utterly ubsurd becasue if I'm buying a used game I'm showing a desire not to pay the asking price for said game. As for backwards compadability, its very simple. Sony and Microsoft actually lose money on every console sold (at least they have in past/present generations) and make their money from software sales. If you buy a console that cost them money and play nothing but old games on it... they are losing money on you, and they won't let that happen. So with that said, these "rumors" are simply common sense conclusions to be drawn.
  • Latin for 'world'..... I think.
  • Why would anybody want backwards compatability with ps2 and ps3 games in the ps4? that would take the fun out of buying your favorite games again when the come out in the psn store.
  • It's just a codename. It means nothing in reflection to the console itself. The new xbox is codenamed Durango!
  • gayy man these systems better be bad a** to not play used games
  • Dang... all of these rumours are killing me. =/
  • assuming the world lasts long, gonna be sweet!
  • Can't wait! But I don't like the non-backwards compatibility (which everyone is)...
  • Didn't Sony say something about not releasing a new console any time soon?
  • everyone jump on the speculation train to conspiracy town!
  • I don't understand why anyone is even surprised anymore when systems aren't backward compatible. Most systems today aren't, or at least not to the degree most gamers would like. The Wii can play GameCube games, so that's cool. The PS3 is sort of backwards compatible in that it can play PS1 titles, but it can't play PS2 games, so that's lame. And I'm pretty sure the xbox360 isn't backwards compatible -at all- (but I don't own one, so I could be wrong). Backwards compatibility has always been a nice idea, but it's never been the rule -- always the exception. I say get used to the idea that you won't be able to play your old games on your new system -- it's just business.
  • This article doesn't have the real important details. If you are interested go to the PlayStation lifestyle website, they have all the juicy details. playstationlifestyle.net/.../comment-page-1

  • GameSphere?

  • Details on specs are thin, and can easily change before the system’s eventual retail release, but Orbis supposedly features an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU which is not only capable of displaying 3D games at full 1080p, but regular, non-3D games at a whopping 4096×2160 resolution.
  • Orbis may sound like an odd name, but it may give clues to how Vita may come into play with the new PlayStation. Orbis Vitae, in latin, means “Circle of Life”. This could hint that the PlayStation Vita could be integral to how Orbis works. If you’re wondering about the validity of the Orbis name… Sony even has a devnet address for Orbis in its system: http://orbis.scedev.net/
  • Much like the Vita, Orbis is said to support retail games (on Blu-ray format) and will have retail games available for download over the PSN. The juiciest of all details is the fact that Sony could be readying this for a holiday 2013 launch.
  • Isnt it a little bit to early yet to release next gen consoles?
