Rumor: The Next PlayStation Codenamed 'Orbis'

Next-generation console rumors continue to surface. This time there's new details on the next PlayStation console.

Reliable sources told Kotaku the console's current working name is Orbis and is set for release in holiday 2013. The console won't support backward compatibility for PlayStation 3 games, either.

Following reported rumors about the next Xbox not supporting used titles, the next PlayStation could link games to your PSN account and implement some sort of "online pass" feature, making used games buyers to be restricted on accessing full game content unless they pay a fee.

Keep in mind these are just rumors. Nothing is confirmed. Sony said it does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Earlier this month, retailer GameStop said it was unlikely that next-generation consoles would lock out used games completely. “We think it’s unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply hasn’t been proven to work," said CEO Paul Raines.

  • hacked!
  • Sounds like a car insurance company.
  • its got a ring to it
  • ummmmmmm...ok?
  • stupid rumors... if i can't play ps3 games i'll be highly upset
  • Are you kidding me?! The PS Orbis doesn't play PS3 games?! That's way past jacked up man!!!!!!!!!!
  • Can't wait to get my hands on the 'orbis'. Holiday 2013 sounds great.
  • codename 'stupid sounding'. on that note the 'revolution' sounded awesome and we got the wii... a little reverse psych on sonys part?
  • The only thing I gather from these rumors is that the PS4, or "Orbis", is going to make the internet very angry.
  • Orbis is actually an area on maplestory. not that i play maplestory O_O
  • Orbis sounds like an insult the british use against bald people.
  • Sega's making a new Dreamcast. There I just started a rumor.
  • Ha! No PS3 support. Exactly why nothing is confirmed. Unless the PS4 (Orbis, please - we all know it'll be the PS4) uses only digital game downloads, I doubt they'll move away from Blu-ray disc games due to the size of the disc. It'll have PS3 compatibility, but I doubt it'll have any PSOne or PS2 compatibility.
  • the only part of that I find believable is linking games to your PSN, but even thats a stretch

  • So they are going in the discount travel and vacation planning direction? Not sure how that helps their gaming fans, but it's their brand i guess.
  • dont change the controller, its golden the way it is. Its just a codename so relax everyone, im sure its will be named PS4. 2013 sounds about right, a year after Wii-U and im sure Xbox ?720? will be out before then...
  • BS. It sounds like someone watched the PS9 advert, which is literally an orb.
  • I bet its retail name is gonna be *dun dun dun* the PS4!
