More People Use Xbox Live For Entertainment Than Gaming

Xbox Live is now used more for watching television shows and movies online than playing games.

"What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Yusuf Mehdi, head of Xbox marketing, told the Los Angeles Times.

Just over half the amount of time spent online through Xbox 360 is spent on entertainment. Households spend an average of 84 hours a month on Xbox Live total, a 30 percent increase from last year.

Microsoft today launched Comcast XFINITY TV, HBO GO and MLB.TV through its Xbox Live service.

  • nice bro

  • XBL is easily the best online service. My wife even uses my xbox regularly to watch Netflix. I can stream downloaded vids from my home PC to my Xbox because they are on the same home network and that is really easy to set up. Add in Hulu and my wife and I found no reason to have cable anymore. We just set up the terrestrial aerial and get the network channels in HD just fine. Xbox has allowed me to ditch cable with glee.

  • One thing the Xbox 360 has over Wii and PS3 is all the entertainment options. I still prefer playstation 3 because of free online and I don't normally use my gaming systems for media other than games(except netflix).
  • Ya sounds about right i have a PS3 when ever i go online i see 2 or 3 friends using netflix.
  • I dont play online much. I mostly use my XBL membership for youtube, netflix, and DLC and downloadable titles.

  • Not suprised, id love to see the stats on the wii
  • I'm sure that is what MS was going for. Gold accounts are gold accounts and while you might get tired of CoD, people never get tired of general entertainment. So how about removing online play from Gold MS?

  • its like microsoft said, the xbox 360 is an entertainment console. personally, i lean towards using the apps on xbox live like netflix and crackle than on my ps3, just because there's more work put into the apps on the xbox to make it look better. if you look at the ps3 netflix, its the same plain form its had since it launched while xbox live has changed it (although i preferred the older style better). plus, microsoft is working to bring more television apps like baseball to the console.

  • I'll still just go do whatever I wanted without a 360.

Too afraid of burning out the system.

  • I use mine primarily for gaming, but to each their own

  • Wow. Not that many people care for Xbox online gaming, except for some of my buds who play MW3. They've been talking about MW3 a lot!

  • Some people say this is great but i think its sad if i made a platform for GAMING and people got the most usage out of the secondary features i would be dissapointed and sure i already expect at least 15 dudes saying oh it has more features it makes it better yeah so does the ps3 and i dont have to pay extra look at it this way if i make a high performance car and the most used feature is the radio i would be pissed off
  • I hate having to have Gold to use Netflix. People already have to pay a monthly fee for Netflix...paying for $60 for Gold on top of that is overkill.
  • Hmm, well this isn't surprising considering all of the other great services offered. =D

  • I'm probably gonna start using mine for HBO Go.

  • Why

  • No surprise here. Who the eff would want to play with the sh**head, future-college-drop-outs that populate all the game servers? If you're going online with a 360, it best be to buy XBLA games and use Netfix. You'd want to avoid THESE GUYS as much as possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXasCjUTNpE I'll try to embed it, but I'm not sure GI's comments can do it:
  • That's why I call it a multimedia machine.

  • That's true. I have now lost interest in multiplayer games, but I love singleplayer games and spending time on Netflix and Youtube when I'm not busy.
