The lights are on
The Entertainment Software Ratings Board, an organization that assigns ratings to games in North America, has deemed the cover of Risen 2: Dark Waters to be too graphic.
The original cover of the game depicted red paint that the ESRB determined could be interpreted as excessive blood, which goes against its marketing guidelines. The red color has since been changed to a lighter blue (see above).
Publisher Deep Silver confirmed the edit to Game Informer this afternoon. "The color backdrop to the game's skull was changed to comply with ESRB guidelines pertaining to elements that could possibly be interpreted as blood," a representative said.
"These changes pertain only to the artwork for North America - all of our other territories will use the original artwork."
The ESRB has been contacted for a statement on the change.
Deep Silver's cover for Dead Island was also altered last year due to ESRB restrictions. The hanging corpse was removed in favor of a zombie.
Risen 2: Dark Waters is out in North America on April 27 for PC and May 22 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
the *** ????????????????????????
I love America!
They should've changed the red to a urine color and seen if anyone noticed lol XD
Wow, talk about an overreaction on the ESRB's part, nice job making the game industry look like a joke guys.
I am looking at the cover for Dead Island right now and I am just not understanding this decision.
I love how the bullet hole in the skull was made clearer in the revised version, and passed as less graphic.
Did they not say anything about the Dragon Age cover? Because I sure as hell saw an anime amount of blood splattered into a dragon... Or was that just paint...
They don't look drastically different, so it doesn't really bother me. The blue doesn't really fit with the theme of it though.
I'm not sure why they had to change it though. It really doesn't look like blood, and even if it did, I wouldn't call that excessive. Although, I don't really see blood as being graphic. Bleeding, sure, but that would probably be considered gore. Blood though? Why? Everyone bleeds. Even if the cover was drenched in blood, I wouldn't say it's too graphic. Maybe if there was bodies laying around or something.
