ESRB Takes The Red Out Of Risen 2's Cover

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board, an organization that assigns ratings to games in North America, has deemed the cover of Risen 2: Dark Waters to be too graphic.

The original cover of the game depicted red paint that the ESRB determined could be interpreted as excessive blood, which goes against its marketing guidelines. The red color has since been changed to a lighter blue (see above).

Publisher Deep Silver confirmed the edit to Game Informer this afternoon. "The color backdrop to the game's skull was changed to comply with ESRB guidelines pertaining to elements that could possibly be interpreted as blood," a representative said.

"These changes pertain only to the artwork for North America - all of our other territories will use the original artwork."

The ESRB has been contacted for a statement on the change.

Deep Silver's cover for Dead Island was also altered last year due to ESRB restrictions. The hanging corpse was removed in favor of a zombie.

Risen 2: Dark Waters is out in North America on April 27 for PC and May 22 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

  • Well , I don't think that's graphic.
  • I guess the ESRB is being pressured by all the government studies. There have been a lot worse game cases. Hopefully, doing things like this will keep the U.S. government off their back.
  • *Sigh* This is a little extreme. Whats next? Guns not allowed on covers of games. Where do we draw the line on censorship?
  • Wow
  • Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak because a baby can't chew it - Samuel Clemens What's so bad about someone thinking its blood, who's really going to lose their *** over it?
  • I can't believe this was actually discussed by the ESRB. Pretty soon they'll have to be covered like porn magazines.

  • Really? Looks more like red paint than blood.
  • A little much? There was nothing wrong with the original cover
  • The Dead Island thing was stupid but this is ridiculous, I think the blue looks better anyway so it works out but a little blood splatter on the cover isn't going to hurt anyone.

  • The blood has officially been changed to red jelly and the blood soaked background is now a happy rainbow.

  • By the way, this reminds me of "The Giver", a book I read a couple of years ago in high school. The leaders of society cause everyone to be colorblind, and other sorts of stuff to remove differences from society. Anyone else read this?
  • Mod
So it was changed to look like Alien blood. The aliens are not going to like this at all.
  • What about that floating hand on the dead space cover? Hmm? That seemed alittle disturbing. What's worse red paint on a wall or floating body parts?
  • Box art for Carmageddon on PC had a pedestrian in a suit getting clipped by a car and blood all over the front and back of the box. I remember walmart forcing a box art change to remove the blood before they'd stock it.
  • Yeah, cuz I was totally more offended by splotches that could possibly be blood than a freaking skull.... Not saying that I'm offended by the skull, I'm just saying that the change was unneeded and downright retarded.
  • Just pretend it's alien blood and it's like nothing changed.

Edit: This joke was ninja'd by Supersnake. Darn him and his cardboard box.
  • If they're changing it to blue, they should change the Dark Waters banner to blue as well. I don't think the blue and red go well together. I'm interested in this game and won't care what the cover looks like but oh well. :P
  • the PC version of dead island still has the original logo

  • And make rainbows and sunshine?
