Minecraft Rakes In $80 Million

Sweden-based Mojang continues to see success with Minecraft. Of the 25 million people that downloaded the game, 5 million have purchased it.

Revenues for Minecraft since its official release in October total $80 million. Carl Manneh, Mojang’s chief executive, told the Financial Times the team has even been approached to do television shows based off the game.

“We’ve been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows,” Mr Manneh told the website. “We may do that. It’s hard when you don’t have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we’d want to work with, we’d say why not?”

Additionally, the report says former Facebook president and Napster co-founder Sean Parker was interesting in investing in the studio last year, but was later turned down.

Mincraft hits Xbox Live Arcade May 9.

  • it deserves that money!!! congrats.

what would sean parker want to do with minecraft. he was already kicked off of facebook and napster, and was played by a bad singer in an oscer winning movie. if im thinking of the right person.

no offense to you justin timberlake fans.
  • Glad they're being cautious. I'm not sure how Hollywood could make TV shows off of this, and I'm not sure they should.
  • Glad to be one of the 5 million that purchased it
  • Oh yaeh? I raked in around $25,000. For the year!
  • Definately deserve this.  Keep putting those creative minds to use!

  • That's nothing! I rake my whole front yard. About an acre worth. Check mate, Minecraft.

  • A tv-show of Minecraft. What what WHAT??? Is it just me, or does that sound like the stupidest tv-show idea ever generated out of Hollywood? (and that's saying quite a lot)
  • some typos at the end!
  • Only 20% have actually purchased the game? No bueno.
  • I am definitely not surprised at this number. And they deserve every penny of it. Great job!

I do wish more people would purchase the game though.

  • The pirating numbers are kinda sad. But even Notch was like "yeah. there are people stealing my game. That sucks, but that's how it is." and basically said he has no interest in any copy protection. No sense punishing his fans that have bought it. That's a pretty uplifted attitude I think. How many people who have already bought it on pc will be buying it for xbox anyway? I know I will be. Not sure why, but I will be.
  • Hopefully this helps launch their other games, I'd love for Notch to team up with Valve to do his RTS Team Fortress idea.

  • If I wanted to watch a Minecraft show, I'd just go on YouTube and fine thousands of people doing their own playthroughs.
  • And that's without piece meal DLC, locked content for used sales, and an online pass.
  • How do you make TV shows off of Minecraft?

  • congrats Notch and everyone else at Mojang! You guys deserve it

  • i hope 13 million really goes to psychonauts 2

  • And with the 360 release I bet it will reach the 100million
