Capcom Needs Resident Evil To Be More Action-y

In order to reach a broader market and make more money, Capcom said it needs the Resident Evil series to evolve from its survival-horror roots.

Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata said a survival-horror focused title wouldn't be a smart business decision nowadays.

"Especially for the North American market, I think the series needs to head in that [action-oriented] direction," Kawata told the website. "[Resident Evil's primary games] need to be an extension of the changes made in Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.

"RE4 started in that direction, and RE5 kept going in that direction," he said. "And I think that especially for the North American market, we need to keep going in that direction, and take that a step further. And that's exactly one of the reasons that Revelations is the way it is," he said.

Kawata is not involved with the development of Resident Evil 6, but said he doesn't think the game needs to move all the way towards action gameplay.

"Looking at the marketing data [for survival horror games] ... the market is small, compared to the number of units Call of Duty and all those action games sell," he said. "A 'survival horror' Resident Evil doesn't seem like it'd be able to sell those kind of numbers."

He added, "I can't really speak for Resident Evil 6, but I don't think that it necessarily has to go all the way in that [action-heavy] direction, the Call of Duty direction. It doesn't have to be a straight up shooter. But my impression is that Resident Evil 4 and 5 aren't shooters, per se."

Kawata said there might still be room for survival-horror through more Resident Evil spin-off titles, however. "So we have our numbered series, and we can say we have a more adventure-oriented version, like a Revelations-style game. And we also have Operation: Raccoon City, which is a third-person shooter," he said.

"So I think that by extending the market in this sense, we can still have the numbered titles keep their identity about what Resident Evil is supposed to be, but still expand and hit other markets as well."

  • I seriously hope they are joking.
  • Capcom is ran by a bunch of fools
  • Great idea Cap-com take away the best part of the series.( sarcasm alert)
  • I miss the old ways. I also enjoy the new ones. I'm happy either way.
  • this is a terrible idea, how will blending in with the crowd of action oriented games increase the appeal.

if they would've said its to improve the game that would be better, but saying its because the north american market buys more action games is a BS reason
  • that is like comparing mcdonalds to a real burger resturant. sure mcdonalds gets more business, but a real burger is more enjoyable.
  • Mainstreamification bothers me, particularly when it is blatantly and entirely for profit. These guys aren't helping the credibility of video games as an artistic medium.

By the way, this is my first ever post on the site. Glad to be joining the fantastic GI community.
  • they dont need to make RE into an action game.....i though a lot of fans cried foul over RE 5...did they not listen? it is an interesting concept but the whole action heavy thing should stick to off shoot titles. survival horror is what made RE, well RE. they should just evolve the survival horror genre like the way dead space did.....
  • So it can be more like the movies I bet. I never even played Gears of War and I'm already sick of the play style even though technically Res evil 4 made it. Just add new gameplay mechanics and make it darker and horrifying. @All game developers STOP WITH THE GEARS OF WAR STYLED ACTION I DON'T WANT THE CAMERA TO DO WEIRD STUFF WHEN I SPRINT I DONT WANT QTE IN THE MIDDLE OF GUNFIGHTS wait gunfights shouldn't be in this game anyway its a zombie game.
  • Wow, Seriously? I think RE4 was soo much better than RE5 BECAUSE of the survival horror aspect of it. If someone wants to go out and buy an action game like COD they will just buy COD! but what if they want a good survival horror? They cant go to Resident evil because it wasn't "action" enough............. In case you haven't noticed im really disappointed in this news
  • Well, optimism for RE6 has gone down a huge notch. They've just killed a large portion of their fanbase business with this irresponsible statement. Nice to know where they stand, though, so no-one wastes their money thinking that they'll be getting an actual Resident Evil title this time around.
  • Didn't they learn anything from Dead Space?
  • He wants to make Resident Evil more action-y so that it'll sell better in North America because if it was the way we liked it it wouldn't sell a billion copies like Call of Duty? Guess what, the series will never sell that many. Just make a game that'll satisfy RE and horror fans and you'll be okay.

  • Mod
This is why I'm finding it hard to care about Capcom and RE in general anymore. You want to know why your games can't and won't do CoD numbers? Because they're not CoD! People that buy those games only buy those games and don't have any interest in any other game, no matter how close to it it is. I really don't understand how Capcom doesn't realize that action and horror can coexist, like in RE 4 or Dead Space 2. The trailer for RE 6 was solid evidence that the RE we all knew and loved isn't there anymore and it saddens me. The fact that they let Operation Raccoon City happen is just icing on the "We have no idea what we're doing anymore" cake.
  • But the completely action Resident Evil games always suck...

  • amnesia dark descent, scariest game ever, no pew pew shooter guns
  • I miss being scared of whats around the corner now its all whatever I got the guns and ammo to take it on...I MISS YOU SURVIVAL HORROR RESIDENT EVIL

  • No just no.

  • Honestly though... I liked RE5 and can't wait for 6 because I know that I will have fun no matter what.
  • Resident Evil needs to look at what Dead Space has done with the genre. Dead Space is the new king of survival horror.
