BioWare Addressing Mass Effect 3 Endings

BioWare says it's working on game content that will hopefully bring closure and clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3.

A new letter posted by Bioware co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka addresses the issues and concerns the team has faced since the game launched earlier this month. Muzyka said the development team is working on a number of game content initiatives that will "help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey."

Muzyka adds that some of the fan outrage has gone a little too far. "We listen and will respond to constructive criticism, but much as we will not tolerate individual attacks on our team members, we will not support or respond to destructive commentary," he said.

He concluded by saying fans will hear more about BioWare's plans for Mass Effect 3 in April.

Below is Muzyka's letter in full:

To Mass Effect 3 players, from Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare

As co-founder and GM of BioWare, I’m very proud of the ME3 team; I personally believe Mass Effect 3 is the best work we’ve yet created. So, it’s incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game’s endings were not up to their expectations. Our first instinct is to defend our work and point to the high ratings offered by critics – but out of respect to our fans, we need to accept the criticism and feedback with humility.

I believe passionately that games are an art form, and that the power of our medium flows from our audience, who are deeply involved in how the story unfolds, and who have the uncontested right to provide constructive criticism. At the same time, I also believe in and support the artistic choices made by the development team.  The team and I have been thinking hard about how to best address the comments on ME3’s endings from players, while still maintaining the artistic integrity of the game.

Mass Effect 3 concludes a trilogy with so much player control and ownership of the story that it was hard for us to predict the range of emotions players would feel when they finished playing through it.  The journey you undertake in Mass Effect provokes an intense range of highly personal emotions in the player; even so, the passionate reaction of some of our most loyal players to the current endings in Mass Effect 3 is something that has genuinely surprised us. This is an issue we care about deeply, and we will respond to it in a fair and timely way. We’re already working hard to do that.

To that end, since the game launched, the team has been poring over everything they can find about reactions to the game – industry press, forums, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few. The Mass Effect team, like other teams across the BioWare Label within EA, consists of passionate people who work hard for the love of creating experiences that excite and delight our fans.  I’m honored to work with them because they have the courage and strength to respond to constructive feedback.

Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. You’ll hear more on this in April.  We’re working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback we’ve received.  This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue.

The reaction to the release of Mass Effect 3 has been unprecedented. On one hand, some of our loyal fans are passionately expressing their displeasure about how their game concluded; we care about this feedback, and we’re planning to directly address it. However, most folks appear to agree that the game as a whole is exceptional, with more than 75 critics giving it a perfect review score and a review average in the mid-90s. Net, I’m proud of the team, but we can and must always strive to do better.

Some of the criticism that has been delivered in the heat of passion by our most ardent fans, even if founded on valid principles, such as seeking more clarity to questions or looking for more closure, for example – has unfortunately become destructive rather than constructive. We listen and will respond to constructive criticism, but much as we will not tolerate individual attacks on our team members, we will not support or respond to destructive commentary.

If you are a Mass Effect fan and have input for the team – we respect your opinion and want to hear it. We’re committed to address your constructive feedback as best we can. In return, I’d ask that you help us do that by supporting what I truly believe is the best game BioWare has yet crafted. I urge you to do your own research: play the game, finish it and tell us what you think. Tell your friends if you feel it’s a good game as a whole. Trust that we are doing our damndest, as always, to address your feedback.  As artists, we care about our fans deeply and we appreciate your support.

Thank you for your feedback – we are listening.

Ray

  • That's good, however I sincerely agree with the Co-Founder's opinion of the amount of nasty comments people have been making all over the place.

I respect Bioware, and am very impressed that they are actually going back and making a better experience. I held off on ME3 just for this occasion.
  • Seriously....I don't even wanna play this anymore, cause you f*cks are building this up so much, that if the ending DOESN'T suck, I will be pissed!!
  • And the false sense of entitlement continues. Everyone complaining Mass Effect 3 didn't end how they wanted does not deserve a better ending. You should all be ashamed.

Here's the thing: The developers make the game, therefore they hold full rights over the conclusion. Ideally, my Shepard would live the rest of his existence on the Citadel with his love interest, but I respect BioWare's decision to end Shepard's journey before sequel fatigue becomes an issue. I believe in developers patching bugs and glitches, but fans taking to messaging forums to complain, whine, and beg for a different ending is simply ridiculous.

What other endings should we rally to change? Maybe spamming Cliff Blezinski's inbox to let Dom live? Or have Anya and Marcus share an illusive kiss? How about petitioning the closing scenes of Halo 3 so Master Chief returns to Earth? Oh I know! Let's e-mail Capcom to ensure Wesker returns in Resident Evil 6 because two RPGs through the face are totally survivable.

EDIT: Since my replies don't seem to be appearing in the comments, I wish to make clear I am not bashing the fanbase. Unless you are one of the many demanding a change to the ending, I could care less how you criticize Shepard's final moments.

A lot of users here seem to be misguided and foolish to think I was defending Shepard's death. I wished to avoid spoilers, so I only alluded to the ending instead of outright stating it.

But some of you presume I am an outsider looking in, insinuating I lack an open perspective. My playthroughs of the Mass Effect trilogy total at twelve currently. I loved every minute of Shepard's adventures (minus the clumsy Mako sequences and tedious mineral scanning), but I don't need to justify my praise of the series. I knew Mass Effect 3's conclusion would churn out some disgruntled fanbase when I received my press copy. I also have my own gripes with the ending, but I find the needless petitioning for DLC closure disgusting and insulting.
  • I should go.
  • New endings... for EVERYONE!!!

No, seriously, this is just f'ed up.
  • And what will happen that will make everyone angry...it will be DLC you have to pay for. I 95% sure that will be the case.
  • The whole controversy over this ending is just sad. After beating the game last night, it really upsets me to see all these players and fans acting like this. The guys at Bioware spent a lot of time and hard work crafting such a great story, with what essentially, was a brilliant and emotional ending, and people are just throwing it back in their face and saying "Not good enough. I want something else." Really? Are you serious? Are you THAT entitled? Not only is it rude, it's wrong. Just wrong.
  • Excellent!
  • Despite the silly endings I loved the game. Mass Effect 3 is a tremendous experience. But most video games have awful endings so I've moved on.
  • This is really freaking me out. My pre-ordered collector's edition of Mass Effect 3 that was retrieved from the store on day 1 by a loyal relative is sitting in my room waiting for me in the US. I'm overseas at the moment with no console and only a netbook so I can't play it yet. I truly believe Game Informer's review of the game and I've been soooooo stoked to play. I'm blacking out all the news so as not to spoil the game so I don't know what the ending is or why some people love it and some hate it. I want to play the game with the ending that it came with! I want that story. I don't want some crowd-sourced fairy tale ending. I'm worried that by the time I get back to the US in July, they will have patched the "real" ending out of existence and I will never get a chance to experience the original game. :(
  • darn, i thought he was going to tell you all to shove it.
  • It BETTER be free -_- I'm not paying for a proper ending to a game I've already bought -_-

PS. this is far from Bioware's best work. FAR FROM IT!
  • Please be the indoctrination theory.

Edit: Also thank you Bioware for listening to your fans, a lot of people feel you've lost touch with your fans well you've just showed everyone who have begun doubting you(including me) thank you for not losing touch with your fans.
  • i applaud Bioware for addressing the concerns but I feel people have been completely overreacting to this. There is no excuse for that player who went to the FTC about the issue. It's ridiculous to believe that the development team didn't work their asses off to make the current ending. If you didn't enjoy it than it seems like a personal problem rather than the problem of the developer.
  • So basically we are stuck with the same crappy, nonsensical ending, it is just expanded on?
  • I have a newfound respect for Bioware after this. If it were me, I wouldn't do anything. After all the time and effort that went into this trilogy, it baffles me that people can be so ungrateful just because they didn't like the ending. Now Bioware is doing something it shouldn't have to because some "fans" are upset. Kudos to you Bioware for trying to please your fans no matter what happens. I can respect that.
  • Victory!!! I never replayed any mass effect games just because I wanted to replay them all together, and the ending ruined that for me.
  • I don't know how I feel about this...
  • Now can we stop the blogs now, jeeze.
