The lights are on
Forget big screen HD televisions. If a recently discovered patent from Microsoft is anything to go by, the future of video game displays might be a device you strap on your head.
Patent Bolt has dug up plans for two types of projector eyewear filed by Microsoft back in 2010. One pair looks like sunglasses, and would potentially be used for smartphones and other handheld devices, while a heftier helmet version would be designed for Microsoft's home gaming consoles. Here's a diagram of the devices, courtesy of Patent Bolt.
The headsets will be able to create 16:9 ratio images that will appear to the wearer as a 21-inch display being viewed at arm's length. The eyewear could also potentially be used to create stereoscopic 3D images, and the lenses can still be transparent, allowing for augmented reality applications. You can read a full rundown of the patent and the possibilities is poses for gaming at Patent Bolt.
So, who's up for wearing a goofy helmet for the future of video games?

I personally think that would be awesome, so long as it was just an option.
Yep, don't think so. Give me an awesome looking visor and we'll talk.
i like the glassess, iiiim not sure about the helmet, but i think ide give it a try. it would be better if they were able to come out with some crazy technology to project the picture directly into your eyes to make it look like your REALLY there (without hurting your eyes or something of course).
Garbage...I prefer my 42in LED...sorry M$.
This can not possibly be safe for extended periods of use. I do believe that it would be extremely cool. But having this that close to your eyes cannot be a good thing. I just don't see this sort of tech working out unless we have robo eyes in the future.
Hmmm, I dont know. I guess it would depend on a few factors. I would have ask: how heavy is the helmet? Is it comfortable enough for extensive gameplay? and What is the cost of the product? Maybe, but I would probably wait and let other people buy it first then hear the pros' and cons. Then I'd make my decision after I got all the facts. As of now I'd be very hesitant to buy it...
I wanna know how its gonna feel for people who wear glasses(me). Also i cant help but wonder about getting sweaty wearing that thing all day. And helmet hair.
Because the Virtual Boy didn't give us enough headaches.
Cool concept, but wouldn't want it unless it was perfect.
It's cool, but who wants to have to wear something to play a game?
I also do not look forward to people having even easier, more persistent access to their cell phones in public...
Why can't we just use the glasses for gaming?
To think, I used to be embarrassed when I had a gaming headset on around other people.
Granted, that's all I had on.
and people say a touch screen controller was stupid. this is what you would have seen in the "failed gameing idea" part of an 80s magazine.
THEY MUST HAVE MISSED THE RECENT ISSUES WITH 3D SALES. LAST I HEARD PEOPLE DIDN'T WANT TO WEAR THOSE GOOFY GLASSES FOR EVERYDAY TV WATCHING OR GAMEPLAY. WHY, OH WHY, WOULD THEY THINK THAT A HELMET WILL BE A GOOD IDEA? WE MUST BE MISSING SOMETHING.
