The lights are on
Forget big screen HD televisions. If a recently discovered patent from Microsoft is anything to go by, the future of video game displays might be a device you strap on your head.
Patent Bolt has dug up plans for two types of projector eyewear filed by Microsoft back in 2010. One pair looks like sunglasses, and would potentially be used for smartphones and other handheld devices, while a heftier helmet version would be designed for Microsoft's home gaming consoles. Here's a diagram of the devices, courtesy of Patent Bolt.
The headsets will be able to create 16:9 ratio images that will appear to the wearer as a 21-inch display being viewed at arm's length. The eyewear could also potentially be used to create stereoscopic 3D images, and the lenses can still be transparent, allowing for augmented reality applications. You can read a full rundown of the patent and the possibilities is poses for gaming at Patent Bolt.
So, who's up for wearing a goofy helmet for the future of video games?
Email the author Jeff Marchiafava, or follow on Google+, Twitter, and Game Informer.
Then they are going to release a special Halo helmet and an entire outfit. Who wants to play as Master Chief?!?
wat happens if those helmets transport us into tron that be freaking awsome.
Because video gamers aren't dorky enough, now they're trying to get us to wear helmets? Are they expecting people to walk into walls while wearing this thing, or do they really just want us to look as embarrassing as possible?
lol *** that.
Looks like Microsoft's mind control helmet just got leaked out
No way in hell. I love gaming as much as anyone, but no.
These have been around for years...I've seen glasses like that in sky mall magazines on plane rides for years now
Never ever will I wear those
I will get this if, and only if, this is used for the screens:
gizmodo.com/.../this-tiny-display-measures-less-than-an-inch-but-still-packs-as-much-resolution-as-the-new-ipad
I would like to keep my eye sight as bad as it is thank you
WTF is this stupid sh*t i dont need this
Yeah no. I'm already wearing glasses, I don't need anymore. I like to have helmet/glasses free gaming. Not a stupid move, no, it's just not going to sell as much as they think. Maybe this will go good with Kinect (Kinect 2.0?). Remember Project Milo? Can you imagine wearing that helmet and being IN Milo's world? That would be great. But, I can easily say that this helmet does not look like it's for a hardcore crowd, and Microsoft has been losing their hardcore crowd lately to Sony's HD Collections and Nintendo's WiiU. Step it up, Microsoft, before people start to hate you more than metalheads hate rap.
Oh gosh... Not another Virtual Boy!
Run away its all mind control don't let then get you!!!!!
do i want to wear a helmet and jump around my living room... no.. not especially. Do i find this interesting yes. I feel like microsoft would be better off using the so called augmented reality aspect in other markets... like say creating augmented reality for military training or law enforcement.....
Reminds me of Google Glasses
I worry about brain tumors just from wearing a stereo headset. I don't need this much radiation that near to my cerebral cortex.
