BioWare Moves To 'Next Phase' Of Dragon Age Franchise

The development behind Dragon Age II is finally complete. The team has finished all content for the game and has moved on to the franchise’s future.

Mark Darrah, executive producer of Dragon Age II, posted on the official BioWare forums saying the team is moving on to what's next. “While we will still be keeping an eye out for any issues that might crop up in DAII and supporting the community should any emergencies should arise, we’re moving the entire team’s focus to the next phase of Dragon Age’s future.”

Darrah wasn’t able to give any hints or clues but suggests the team is taking a good, hard look at the series going forward.

“You’ve most certainly heard the rumors floating around, and unfortunately I can’t really comment on them,” he said. “However, what I can say is that we’ve been thinking a lot about Dragon Age – what it means, and where it could go.  This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time both going back to the ‘BioWare vault’ of games and re-examining them, and looking at some new possibilities that today’s industry allows.”

In an interview with Wired last December, BioWare CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka said his studio was looking heavily at games like Skyrim. “[The next Dragon Age] is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it’s also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open-world feel. We’re checking [Skyrim] out aggressively.

"We like it. We’re big admirers of [Bethesda] and the product. We think we can do some wonderful things."

  • Are they gonna release a DLC bundle like they did with DA:O, I would really like to get everything together.

  • Just make a new IP! Everyone knows that you guys weren't able to screw a new series up yet...

  • I'm hoping they go back to basics and give us a great new installment in the dragon age rpg series. I loved the hell out of Origins, 2 not so much. They should listen to the fans and not rush this, then Bioware will pull it off

  • This is awesome news! I'll hopefully be able to play Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 before the next installment comes out.

  • I just bought the second Dragon Age game. I'm going to go into it with a level head and adjusted expectations. I hope its worth the 10 dollars.

  • Origins was a masterpiece, Dragon Age 2 was ok although it had a lot of problems. Hopefully DA3 is more like Origins but if Bioware doesn't solve the ME3 ending problem then it's not going to matter.
  • So are they going to release a Ultimate edition or Complete Edition for this game??? I really try to avoid downloading large DLC files on the PS3 since my internet is really slow compared to the World.

  • Well, im going to have to agree with almost everyone else here. Loved the first, hated the second. Definitely willing to give them one more shot at this though as i just love the lore of the series.

  • The first game was so very near and dear to me and i loved the story and mechanics of it. I must be honest, the second game was somewhat of a disappointment to me. I mean, the story was very good, but I feel it should have stayed close to its RPG roots. I sincerly hope that the next installment is of the same quality as the first.

  • I bought DA2 on launch day, never buying an Bioware product on launch day ever again. While it wasn't an bad game, it was an quick cash in and an insult to the Dragon Age name. And copying other people's games isn't really an good idea either. They should try to find out what direction they really want to go in.

  • I didn't play the first game because I didn't have a PC good enough to play it and didn't like what they did with the console version. I was interested in DAII but I skipped it after reading some reviews. Hopefully DAIII works out. Third times a charm.

  • Dragon Age III would be a fantastic opportunity to put the top things from the first rendition and the second into a epic game. I'm still hoping for some love to Jade Empire too as well.

  • Please be better than DA2, Please be better than DA2, Please be better than DA2, Please be better than DA2, I'm begging you BW don't disappoint me again.

  • BioWare has some unfinished business to take care of first.

I know, I know, they have different development teams, but still.

  • I loved the first Dragon Age, I played the demo for Dragon Age 2 and wasn't very impressed by the gameplay, which led to me not picking it up in favor of other titles, and right now, it's pretty low on my list of games that I want to play but have yet to play and that list grows all the time, so I don't know if I'm ever going to actually play it.

  • I can't believe I'm saying this but: 1) Not buying another Bioware product & 2) Oh yeah, let's look at Skyrim and dumb the combat down even more! What happened to KOTOR and Morrowind?
  • I may be in the minority here but I actually enjoyed DAII about as much as the original Dragon Age. The combat was a lot more active and engaging (again, just my opinion) and the story wasn't half bad.

One thing I wasn't a fan of was forcing players to play as a pre-made human character. I'm sure Bioware was trying to go for a Shepard-esque setup with it but after having so much more creative freedom in the first game, it was a change that didn't take too well with me.

I was also a bigger fan of the graphics/artwork of the first Dragon Age, the second one felt a little too "cell-shaded" for me. I also had the misfortune of having to deal with several annoying bugs and glitches during my DAII playthrough including a very frusterating save-game related bug that really detracted from the experience.

That being said, if DAIII has the same character-creation freedom as the original and the active and visceral combat of DAII along with a solid story and no annoying bugs, I'll definitely give it a shot.

  • I have doubts that DA3 could live to up to Skyrim expectations with the EA umbrella over Bioware's heads. If they were given the time to work on it, i'm sure the quality of Bioware would shine through. We can only hope that EA learns from DA2's mistakes and listens to the fanbase. Until then we are stuck with a deteriorating franchise that can only get worse. The only thing we can guarantee stays consistent and gets better is the Mass Effect franchise. :sigh: Where have the days of KOTOR and Jade Empire gone?

  • Sounds like something sinister is about to happen to Dragon Age. I mean, more so than already.
