[Updated] Microsoft Says Xbox Live Arcade Will Eventually Be Phased Out

[Update]

Through its PR agency, Edelman, Microsoft issued an official statement on this story, assuring gamers that Xbox Live is in no danger of being taken down.

“Xbox LIVE Arcade is and will continue to be the premier destination for quality downloadable games at a great value, boasting an ever-growing, eclectic library of hundreds of games, spanning every genre. We are committed to providing new downloadable games for Xbox 360 and continuing our work with 1st and 3rd party developers on the platform. We have no plans to dissolve the service at this time.”

[Original Story]

In a new interview, Microsoft's Michael Wolf speculates that Xbox Live Arcade will eventually be phased out as digital distribution matures.

In an interview with Vox Games, Wolf, Microsoft's global marketing manager for XBLA, said that the service might eventually be taken down due to the increasingly blurred line between large-scale retail games and ambitious XBLA games.

When asked if XBLA would eventually be phased out of existence, Wolf answered, "Personally, I'd say absolutely, yes. I think digital distribution has to be like that. I don't think XBLA will be leaving soon. It is an incredible platform. We have XBLA fans, I don't think it's going to be announced anytime soon. One thing Microsoft has proven is that we continue to try and adapt and innovate in experiences."

However, that doesn't mean that the company is turning its back on downloadable games. It would rather be a reaction to the changing market, citing the example of Remedy's Alan Wake: American Nightmare, which in past year's would have been a retail, disc-based game. In the future, as XBLA games become more ambitious and more triple-A games go digital, designating games as "Xbox Live Arcade" games might be a meaningless distinction.

  • Well, duh. I mean, did we expect them to keep it up forever? Of course as the different ideas for how digital distribution work improve, we're going to see new systems brought in and old systems forgotten. That's how everything works. Heck, I'd expect it to be gone a lot sooner than Wolf seems to be saying here.
  • well i wonder what there going to call it next?
  • thats funny

  • I don't get it.
  • Seems like a pointless article
  • microsoft doesn't know what it's doing with games and kinect
  • Makes sense. Although, this wouldn't really change much besides names.
  • what are they gona make? Xbox live Gamestop? Nah, they willkeep iit because it is an icon, i think download i think xbla, same with psn.

  • A lot of people are reading this and not understanding it would seem;

MS isn't abandoning what's been a major source of revenue for them with the 360; the 'phasing out' of the XBLA is just a marketing/branding issue (ie a name change, maybe some other updates to the frontend of the digital storefront). The word 'Arcade' doesn't aptly describe the more ambitious titles that are starting to be released via digital distribution; they merely want to shift the perception of what's offered in their store to fit this bigger picture reality they're moving towards.

They are absolutely not just shutting off the tap on what's been a huge boon to the 360 as a console, MS as a business, (at least some) small devs for getting their stuff out their, and gamers looking for those more unique experiences.
  • Ummm ok? Not sure what the point of that article was.

  • aw man, there are some sweet casual titles.  better start downloading while they're still up.  castle crashers/ toy soldiers are the best IMO.

  • I love the distinction we have right now between the retail, disc games and XBLA...of course, nothing is forever, but it still stinks that XBLA might be going away within the next few years!
  • Why don't they just keep it and make something else for the bigger games. Although, I guess it could get confusing.
  • Seems pointless to get rid of it, since any digital store would still have categories to separate the likes of retail game from an indie game. So the distinction would still be there, however it would easier to bury indie games behind blockbusters, which would defeat the purpose of even having the digital service for those smaller devs. They might as well just be collecting dust on shelves at retail, it would be the same situation.

So I think it would be wise to retain the XBLA and call full a retail store, something else. Like they way Nintendo separates Wii Ware games from Virtual Console games.

  • I really like having physical copies of games. If given a choice between buying a boxed game and downloading a game, I'll go with the boxed game. Unless there is substantial discount on the downloadable version. If they do move to an all or primarily download model, I hope they pass the savings in packaging and distribution on to the consumer.
  • So, what happens to the games bought on Xbox live? They DID cost ACTUAL money and the last time I checked, when I BUY a game...It's not a rental.
  • Matt you had me worried with that title, instead of Microsoft getting rid of it, it'll be more of a name change I assume.

  • And in other news, the chemical formula for water is H2O
  • Change is good, and I guess they will obviously be doing this to lead the way to new things. Eventually.

  • lol, so basically your telling me that everything one day will go digital. Wow, to think I just traded in my typewriter for a laptop, now this, the world certiantly is moving fast I'd say! what's next delivery pizza? oh just the thought is revolutionary!
