Game Of Thrones Gets Its Own MMO

by Jeff Marchiafava on Feb 29, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Another day, another Game of Thrones game announcement. This time it's a free-to-play MMO.

Not to be confused with last year's troubled Game of Thrones RTS, or Cyanide's upcoming Game of Thrones RPG, this newest Game of Thrones will be a browser-based, free-to-play MMORPG being published by Bigpoint and developed by Artplant. The two companies teamed up on Battlestar Galactica Online, which also runs in-browser via the Unity plug-in. All of this raises two questions. First, do we really need another Game of Thrones game? And second – there's a Battlestar Galactica MMO?! How did I not know about this?

Bigpoint will be showing off Game of Thrones at GDC next week, and plans to start a closed beta this fall. My initial reaction to the project is that maybe HBO should have just approved one triple-A Game of Thrones title – or at least waited until Cyanide's Game of Thrones comes out to announce another one – but I'll reserve judgment until we see the game in action. Now to go play some Battlestar Galactica Online.
