Rumor: Sony Going With AMD For PS4

A rumor has surfaced courtesy of some former AMD employees who say that Sony is going with AMD for the PlayStation 4's GPU.

Forbes has the short and sweet tidbit, which simply states, "[AMD] may play a key role in the new product."

It's worth noting that Sony competitor Microsoft used AMD for the Xbox 360.

Neither Sony nor AMD will comment on the matter.

  • So um...what's AMD? I thought it said UMD at first...
  • Interesting. nVidia has a better track record but AMD is about on par with them these days and probably gave sony a better deal. Good decision overall probably. I just hope this gen of consoles will have a better graphics card than what's currently in my pc.
  • Interestinggg. I am a fan of AMD GPU's, own a AMD crossfire PC. Chances are that Sony chose them because they would save a lot of money in the end and still get pretty good performance.
  • So....is this a good thing?
  • I don't think it's really accurate to call Sony and Microsoft competitors. I mean, for one, it's an oligopoly, so the competition is really apples and oranges. And besides that, there's a lot of collaboration between the two. Particularly seeing as how Sony PCs typically run Windows.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong but does the Wii U have AMD technonology? I think I read something about that...
  • I was hoping they'd Run-DMC.
  • Rumor, shumor,Show me some hardware! All these rumors can a make person go crazy!!

  • Yes! We can expect console prices to be very reasonable because of this. Trust me guys, this is a good thing. A very good thing... AMD's quality while maintaining a value price is incredible.
  • But I thought Sony basically took themselves out of releasing a console for next year? Why does this matter if the previous statement is true?
  • Well, this is actually really old news. It's been rumored AMD was going to be used for both the PS4/720 for awhile now.
  • someone answer this, how do you know when someone responds to your post? or you manually have to check??
  • Well that's interesting. I've always preferred nVidia over AMD myself but hey whatever they wanna use. I own both current systems and never really cared which one the consoles use cause within years they are out of date anyways. Oh well maybe this will help them? Idk. Will see.

  • Ironic. =D

  • eh dont care. just bring me games and if you dare make it non playable against used games i will hurt sony

  • I wonder if not being involved in the console market at all will hurt Nvidia. As a "green team" fanboy, I hope it just means they concentrate more on PC graphics cards. Realistically though, I'm worried we'll actually see a dip in quality corresponding to a lower cash flow.
  • Interesting. I wonder if they'll hint at anything for their next console at this year's E3.
  • I'd rather have an AMD in it than some other things. AMDs are usually pretty good for the money, and pretty goo in terms of power as well. I don't think it needs to have a processor to much more powerful than the PS3, they just better add some RAM, the poor PS3 struggles as it is with multitasking.
  • Whatever.
