Sony Santa Monica Enlisted To Help With The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian has had a rocky development period, but Sony says that internal studios like Sony Santa Monica are helping on the game.

In an interview with Wired, worldwide studio head Shuhei Yoshida admitted that the rumors of The Last Guardian developer Team Ico calling in for help are true. "Well, you know, it’s not just Santa Monica," said Yoshida. "We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK, so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the US and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice."

Yoshida also reiterated that creative director Fumito Ueda is still very much involved in the development of the project, despite the fact that he's decided to leave the studio after the game is complete. According to Yoshida, the game is playable, but not to the point where Sony is comfortable issuing a release date.

  • Dang, talk about your troubles. Hopefully it comes out this year.

  • I just hope this doesn't end up being the Chinese Democracy of video games.  Sooooo much hype to live up to.  It's gonna be hard for it to pay off.

  • So it's playable, just needs polish? As long as it's not cancelled, they can take as long as they want. I just want to play the game at it's best.

  • The more and more I hear regarding this title, the more I worry that it will not live up to expectations. Having multiple studios working on a game usually isn't a good sign.
  • Is anyone still excited for this? I was but these delays are kind of killing it for me.
  • And the plot thickens! Dun, dun, dun!

  • How long **BRAAAHHHH**!!

  • Wow, they really are having issues.

  • Man, this game's had a lot of difficulties but for them to be calling in a lot of other studios to help out must mean they're way off from where they want to be.
  • I'm still not convinced this game will actually come out.

  • Bout time they got serious.

  • Sad to know that Ueda will be leaving after The Last Guardian. I just hope that we will see more games with his creative talent regardless of what he does once this is done.

  • A well needed kick-in-the-pants for SCEJ. Granted, Team Ico is a small team, but if they needed more resources, they should have said something much sooner. But I won't pretend to know what's really going on over there, so I'll reserve my judgement.

  • It's going to be really, really sad if, after all of this time, the game comes out and it's not GREAT.  I understand an 8/10 is a good score, sure, but I mean, if this game is so ambitious it -requires- all of this outside development help, then it better be mindblowingly worth it when all is said and done.

(I've had it on pre-order for, what, like 2 years now... Even when gamestop auto-bot left me a voicemail telling me to cancel it...)

  • I'm starting to feel the game won't feel as Ico's predecessors. Kind of external interference.
  • can we at least get a trailor, or some new screenshots?

  • Good luck!

  • Stupid question but is this part,of the,ico trilogy? If so thats amazing

  • I just hope that this gets done and it will be as awesome as I think it will be...

  • I wonder what the issue is. They must have a really bold and unique vision for it to be running into so much trouble. Guess I'll just have to be patient with this one.
