Witcher Franchise Sells Big In 2011

by Jim Reilly on Feb 21, 2012 at 06:00 AM

CD Projekt RED announced the Witcher franchise sold 1.5 million copies last year.

The PC version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings sold more than 1.1 million copies in the first seven months following the game's release, the studio said. Digital copies accounted for 24 percent of that total. The first Witcher game, released in 2007,  sold 400,000 copies in 2011.

"We were all incredibly surprised by the number of copies sold," said Adam Badowski, head of the CD Projekt RED. "The Witcher 2 has garnered over 60 industry awards, and gamers seem to love it. I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, 5 years on from the game's premier, are remarkable."

The studio previously said it estimated that over 4.5 million copies of the Witcher 2 were pirated.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition for Xbox 360 and PC is due out on April 17.
