Sakaguchi Complains About Final Fantasy

Hironobu Sakaguchi may have stepped away from the Final Fantasy franchise to start up his own Mistwalker studio, but that doesn't mean he still doesn't have some thoughts about the franchise he created.

In an interview with CVG, Sakaguchi said that when the alcohol is flowing, his tongue is loosened when it comes to his baby. "I still go out drinking with Yoshinori Kitase, the current producer of Final Fantasy, once in a while, and on those occasions he does tell me that it's all fine. Sometimes, I personally complain a little bit about certain things about the franchise."

Unfortunately, Sakaguchi didn't divulge exactly what things he's not happy with, but he did give Kitase his overall vote of confidence. "I believe that if it's him in charge, he will continue to create good games for the franchise."

Sakaguchi isn't the only one who's got complaints. For Joe's opinion of Final Fantasy XIII-2 in particular (shown), take a look at his review.

  • yeah i think its started to go down hill since he left :/

  • Here's my complaint: Not enough f***ing Ivalice Alliance games.
  • Well, Final fantasy XIII-2 has shown that square isn't completely lost. They tried, and the game is very addicting. Plus if it keeps getting better, maybe final fantasy 16 or 1t will be amazing. Also one thing I want to point out is that 13 and 13-2 have attracted a lot of new fans, which could be a good or bad things.
  • I personally wish that Square Enix would stop devoting so much time to creating Final Fantasy MMOs which get official numbered entries to the detriment of actual FF games.  Imagine how much better XIII-2 might have been if SE didn't have so many people working damage control on the embarrassing FFXIV.  Ditch the MMOs and give us proper entries in the series, and make them great again.

  • Mod

Joe should have a few drinks and give Kitase a piece of his mind.

  • My complaint: Horrible story-telling (from X-2 to present). They fix that, all will be forgiven.
  • FF was good back in the day, but now it is starting to get dry. I wonder how much longer they can keep this up.

  • My complaint is the storytelling. There hasn't been an epic story since FF VI. Been some good ones FF VII, FF IX and X. (imo) Get back to storytelling and away from trying to impress with better graphics with each installment.
  • It's ok Sakaguchi, I do it too.

  • You have a great battle system. NOW WORK ON THE STORY TELLING!!

  • For me, XIII and XIII-2 represent a kind of flip flop of reasons of why I play FF games. Before XIII, I played FF games because of their characters and world building. The battle systems were something that I found enjoyable, but I never went around looking for fights unless I needed materials to make stuff. However, with XIII and XIII-2, with the exception of Lightning and Sazh, I couldn't give a sh!t about the cast or the world they inhabit. It's just so poorly written. But I still find myself sinking hours upon hours into the games because the battle system is so well done. I'm actually really looking forward to the DLC to see what I else I get to fight.
  • To be honest, Final Fantasy just needs to go back to storytelling. The gameplay issues of XIII have been pretty much fixed in XIII-2. They combine it all with a story worth the investment and I promise people will come back.

This is coming from a person who didn't think XIII was all that bad, a little convoluted in the story, but otherwise alright. JRPGs have always been more linear then western ones and that's fine, not every game needs to have the open-worldness of Skyrim.

  • I don't like the direction the series is going, but I understand people do enjoy the current FF, so I'm not going to say it's dying or anything. The series just doesn't hold me like it used too. Getting the next FF wasn't ever a question at one point. Now, I've decided not to get 13-2, and it's probably the first along the numbered series that I won't play. FF 15 doesn't count. If it ever gets too dry or unpopular, I hope they do a reboot like a lot of series are doing, and just call the next game Final Fantasy. If not, I do hope that there will be a new JRPG series to define this generation or the next. Xenoblade Chronicles was a step in the right direction, but that game would've been gorgeous on 360/PS3. I guess Dark Souls is the closest we got, but that's a bit too hardcore for me.
  • I would complain too. Emo girls prancing around with big swords? Games that play themselves? Dumb storylines plagued with inconsistencies and characters you want to strangle?
  • well my main complain is that...this is not FF anymore... i do not longer care about this games anymore, when i remember back in high school i used to skip a day when a final fantasy game came out, VIII was the best of them, but going back to the point, FF13 lost all the magic about the series, the characters are dull, it feels like they are trying to make a western videogame, its supossed to be JRPG!!! look at PErsona 3 and 4, they are full with Japan cultural things and its amazing, I rather wait for any atlus JRPG, Squere-Enix is just a lame company for me now, i remember the days when you didnt even have to wait for the review of any Squaresoft (now Squre-Enix) game, you just knew it was going to be awesome... now i don't even care about the game they release

  • My favorite was FF8. I loved the junction system, and collecting magic and cards from different monsters was really fun. FF12 is probably my second favorite. I loved changing each characters triggers to see how they would do in battle. The thing is, for both FF8 and FF12 you had to think out what your characters would do before they went into combat, where with FF13's role-changing bullcrap you have to think on your feet. Actually in a way it seems less cerebral and more like twitch gameplay than anything. Whoever can change roles the fastest, is the better player.
  • they gave me sazh as a character so im happy

  • I've had complaints about the series since FFX it just went downhill from there.

  • All the characters are way too emotional. It's just sappy and unrealistic and takes away from the immersion and overall experience.
  • And all those complaints are completely legit. Square is running Final Fantasy into the ground and has been since XII. You want Final Fantasy XIII? Go out and buy Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey because you won't be getting it XIII.XIII-2 or for the sake of humanity let it not come out XIII-3.
