Reader Discussion: What Would You Want From Valve Hardware?

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently posited that the company would "make hardware if we have to." What's your dream scenario for hardware from the Steam/Half-Life/Portal studio?

Would you want Valve to buy a service like Gaikai and make a cheap set-top box that streams the whole Steam catalog over a cloud player service? Maybe a console itself that competes directly with offerings from the big three would be your best-case scenario, or a tablet that plays proper PC games (stupid-looking controller not included).

I'll start: If it comes preloaded with Half-Life 3, it could look like a purple lunchbox and I'll be there day one. Day one.

Whatever your own personal hopes are, this reader discussion thread is here for you.

  • A new console to go up against Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo might be fun. We haven't had a new entrant since Microsoft joined the fray, and it might be just different enough to keep Apple from jumping in and ruining video games more than it already does. The major problem would be for Valve to somehow snag enough First-Party strength to actually compete with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.
  • I think this a pretty big admission that they are waiting for next generation to finish half-life 3

  • Hardware? Well, it would be nice to have connectivity between it and my phone. But other than that, just having a PC is fine for me.

    Amen, brother Adam. Amen.

  • And this is how Glados becomes Glados in the future !

  • I am perfectly happy with how they are now. But I would also buy a Steam/Valve Console system immediately on day one. As much as I love my PS3, I would throw it out the window (not really) if Steam got into the console market. They are absolutely hands-down the best in the biz.
  • Make a controller that delivers the same precision that a mouse and keyboard delivers, so we can play arena shooters and Strategygames from the couch.

Also, have a voice recognition that works for ingame Dialogue so we can finally talk to NPCs instead of listening to cutscenes or clicking through textboxes.

This are the 2 things I'd like to see solved next gen.

  • If it comes preloaded with Half-Life 3 and looks like a purple lunchbox, then you've got yourself the world's most valuable Gamecube.

  • I would buy it regardless, simply for its 1st-party products. What I I would like to see an interface that could support up to 6 controllers/players on the same console.

  • Why are they worried about hardware when we still want Half-Life 3?

    Demand. We still demand HL3.

  • valve is a good company but they are UBER arrogant if they can't build a kickass halflife 3 with the tech that is available then they suck!!!!!!!!!! VALVE portal concept and controls are really inventive but not a single 1 of your games has pushed any pc/console to there limits. how about bringing left 4 dead to ps3 and make halflife 3 multiplatform and shut up. OH and counter strike!!!

  • To be honest I don't want them to make hardware at all, especially a game console since it would be stomped into oblivion by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Though if anything I would want a gamebox that automatically backs up all your cloud data onto a mini-server at your house...maybe a 1 TB box perhaps? I don't have a gaming computer so I don't use cloud services, but from what I hear they are unplayable without Internet. With a gamebox this flaw could be corrected.

  • i agree Adam, a PC that can play Half-Life 3, Cmon Valve pull it out and get it done.

  • I think Valve is great at developing games and they should just stick to that. What hardware could they really come out with that could do well anyways? They said it themselves that they are not hardware designers. They don't have enough of that kind of expertise to really do anything significant, so why even take the chance. Just quit dragging ass on game development and you won't have to worry about about releasing any kind of hardware. Half-Life 3 NOW!
  • Valve should make a console that can play PS3, XBOX360, and WII games, and have direct connection to the steam store. Between that and my PC, hmmmmmm... yep I'm completely covered. And Halflife 3.
  • I want Valve to have Sega's software games like new Sonic games on a new Valve system. Maybe Sega might re-release Sonic Adventure 2 on Valves new console, and make Adventure 2 Battle as an add-on.

  • I'd rather they just release more games!!!
