Reader Discussion: What Would You Want From Valve Hardware?

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently posited that the company would "make hardware if we have to." What's your dream scenario for hardware from the Steam/Half-Life/Portal studio?

Would you want Valve to buy a service like Gaikai and make a cheap set-top box that streams the whole Steam catalog over a cloud player service? Maybe a console itself that competes directly with offerings from the big three would be your best-case scenario, or a tablet that plays proper PC games (stupid-looking controller not included).

I'll start: If it comes preloaded with Half-Life 3, it could look like a purple lunchbox and I'll be there day one. Day one.

Whatever your own personal hopes are, this reader discussion thread is here for you.

  • I don't see why valve would need to make hardware. Playing their games on the PC with Steam works just fine. I wouldn't be opposed to them making a new console though, it'd be interesting to have some fresh competition.
  • Nice GameCube reference! Anyway, I don't think Valve has enough experience with hardware to make a system. If it does happen, I'd like it to be a traditional console with new gizmos and thingamajigs added to make it stand out against the big three.

OR, they could make a new controller optimized for Steam. Hardware isn't limited to just desktops and consoles, after all.
  • Personally, I think an 80386 processor and ps/2 keyboard support would be a bare minimum. Maybe DDR RAM, but SDRAM may be more economical.
  • Make it look like a crowbar.
  • If Valve partnered with a preexisting set-top box company and allowed steam to be streamed through them, that would probablybe cheap and awesome!

  • They should put a v infront of everything, like Apple does with i
  • The ability to USB Crossfire it, and all of its processing power/software with my existing PC.
  • First and foremost Spechs: CPU: Quad core GPU: 1 GB RAM: 8 GB (RAM is cheap) HDD: 1 TB Second: 1) The ability to stream gameplay Live. 2) The ability to record gameplay and easily post it to Youtube. 3) A private/party chat system similar to the 360, for that chat system is great. 4) All the innovations that came with the previous generation (friends, play music while playing games, and all the normal stuff) So, everyone ok with that?
  • I would prefer them to not make a console, as Xbox 360, PS3, and PC are enough choices and possible exclusives for me. But if they did, I want it to be called a Steambox.
  • Steam for sure, then a good controller, and lastly a GOOD LAUNCH LINEUP. That last ones important.
  • I would want Valve to really work on making an innovative console, that takes advantage of things that we haven't seen before. If anything, though, I would want them to utilize disks, because I don't really like to make use of digital sales just yet. They could do some great things... And they already have Steam in line, so they don't have to worry about an online service. Keep it free, and offer cross-play with PC's and I'd already be pretty happy. Ooh, and maybe even allow upgradeable hardware?! This way they could make a base game for all the people who have the normal system, but people who have better systems can up the graphics and processing capabilities...
  • If Valve came out with something like the Razer Switchblade (when's that coming out anyway?) I would pick that up quicker than anything.
  • What I want is for them to forget about making a console and make Half-Life 3.
  • What I would want from Valve hardware is for it not to exist. I can see the potential, but it's far too risky of a venture considering how established the current environment is. Valve is a successful company, but not a Sony or a Microsoft, they aren't going to be able to buy their way in. First party software would be good, not unlike Nintendo's, but third party support is a big question mark. And of course, we all know they wouldn't release Half-Life 3 until the second generation their console, if ever.
  • I'll say one thing. I'd rather have valve be my hardware manufacturer than Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Valve has done nothing but classy acts since they've been in this industry, I have nothing but good things to say about them.
  • I want one that comes with Half Life 3.

  • Eh, I think I am done with consoles. I've really been wanting to switch to PC for about 2 years or so.

As for Valve making hardware, I don't think it'd really be a bad idea. I don't think they should rush it out next-gen though.

I would expect it to be a system that runs a controller friendly version of steam; keyboard and mouse would of course be supported. The entire steam library would be available at launch with non controller friendly games being updated at the discretion of the creators. Console and PC owners would play together in perfect harmony aside from the unavoidable trash talking.
    .
The biggest problem I foresee would be the physical limitations of the hardware. Developers having to account for it. And how often Valve would want to release updated hardware.

Unless.. they went the route of onlive. Having PC servers run the game and stream them into our homes. Then hardware becomes issue of bandwidth.
  • The closer and closer we get to the next-gen, the more and more confused I get about what directions hardware companies are taking. In the old days, it was better graphics and more memory, and we were stoked as heck about just those two things.

Anyway, peripherals seem to be all the rage nowadays Which isn't a bad thing. What Valve seems to be able to offer more than anything else (as they stand) is new and innovative software. If they formed a giant team of hardware entrepreneurs(yep!), whom had the brains and ideas to build a franchise-type console, then maybe there would be a chance of one or two consoles being sold. But the hardware would have to be pretty darn inventive. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a new market-changing product spice things up a bit.

So, personally, I would like to see more jobs and less war-oh wait wrong politics. I meant Emotion sensing Wireless Interface (Ewi)and an automated blood-sugar checker/killswitch. And a new video game genre. Then I would get one opening day.
