Valve: 'If We Have To Sell Hardware We Will'

The makers of Half Life and Team Fortress are opening to the idea of creating more than just software experiences. Speaking in an interview with Penny Arcade, Valve boss Gabe Newell explains that while creating hardware isn't necessarily a first option, the company isn't shy about doing so if it needs to be done.

"If we have to sell hardware we will," he said. "We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do.

"It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do then that’s what we end up having to do."

  • Wow. Why didn't they just say "We'll do anything to avoid making Episode 3. We'll even make hardware."
  • I really don't see the point. The hardware market still has tons of innovation in it. The only thing I can think of is Half Life or Valve licensing on hardware.

  • No Valve we don't need another CONSOLE.

  • Meh, particularly since there's would probably be an all digital platform, built around Steam.

  • woah, what if they just made half-life 3?

  • If Valve made a console, I'd probably buy it. I love Valve's software, they have never really let me down.

  • I'd be all for that

  • Stick to what you do best and that's GAMES Valve. Now, Get on Half-life 3 already!

  • You heard it here, Valve is making a next generation game console! Ha ha, that'd be pretty cool so long as they could secure enough exclusive contracts to be able to compete with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. We haven't had a new player in the industry since Microsoft joined the bandwagon.
  • and that will be the day they will close doors forever..go ask sega...
  • wow i am generally impressed no one used the orange box pun

  • Why would you make these kinds of statements with no intent to act? I like a good portion of what Valve does, Gabe Newell seems kind of like a tool though.

  • If they have to do it, that's what they'll do? What exactly are the odds that Valve will have to start making hardware? Are people not buying their games? This is just a publicity stunt.

  • What? SteamStation is too mainstream?

  • steam on PS Vita? why not, the cards the games come on are small and im supposing cheaper than writing a bunch of disc, they are like glorfied SD cards really

  • They can sell hardware. People are in a big need for, I don't know, valves.
  • Steamboy? I like that!
