The Best-Selling HD Remasters At Retail

The God of War Collection remains the best-selling HD remaster to date.

With the help of retail tracking firm NPD, we put together a top 10 list of best-selling HD remaster games released in the U.S. so far at retail.

The list does not include download sales, however. Most HD remasters are now available digitally through PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Download-only titles like Resident Evil 4 HD and Beyond Good & Evil HD are absent from this list for that reason.

Here is the list ranked by most units sold:

  1. God Of War I & II Collection (Nov. 2009)
  2. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Nov. 2011)
  3. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (Nov. 2011)
  4. The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection (Sept. 2011)
  5. The Sly Collection (Nov. 2010)
  6. God of War: Origins Collection (Sept. 2011)
  7. Tomb Raider Trilogy (Mar. 2011)
  8. Prince Of Persia Trilogy (Apr. 2011)
  9. Tekken Hybrid (Nov. 2011)
  10. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Trilogy (Sept. 2011)

“High definition re-masters are a great way for publishers to dive into their back catalog, polish up the old favorites, and meet the needs of two groups: gamers who missed out on these classics; and those gamers who nostalgically remember these games and want to experience them again in HD," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

With other HD re-releases coming in 2012, such as the Jak and Daxter Collection, the Devil May Cry HD Collection, and Final Fantasy X HD, we'll keep this list updated throughout the year and beyond.

Comments
  • I wonder where Final Fantasy X will land on this list after its release.
  • I have five on this list.  The God of Wars are just insane.  The chaos and over the top testosterone driven madness is soo much fun!!!

  • No wonder God Of War I & II Collection is No. 1. In 2010 they were giving them away at Walmart for $10 on Black Friday (that's when I got my copy). The best deal I ever got...

Also got the two RE HD remakes (4 and CVX). Definitely will get FFX and MGS. TR and GoW: Origins are on my "maybe" list too.
  • MGS HD is sold out everywhere near me! Can't find a copy. Had to order it online.

LOTS of Tomb Raider copies though!

  • grr, I wants Prince of Persia in HD! for Xbox! lol. Ah well I have them for PC so that's good enough!

  • I'm also looking forward to the Silent Hill HD Collection. Hope it turns out good!

  • I hope the Jak and Daxter Collection does well. I know I'll get it! Hopefully it'll show Naughty Dog how popular Jak and Daxter still is

  • I need to pick up a couple of these sets...
    Jak & Daxter
    Metal Gear Solid
God of War I & II
  • I'm still annoyed that we aren't getting the Splinter Cell Trilogy on Xbox 360. I started the series with that system/controller, I'm not playing it with my PS3 controller **BRAAAHHHH**.
  • Wow God of War is on there twice. And Halo Anniversary is no.2 already, seems like its already close to gaining no.1.

  • I would love a remastered Final Fantasy IX... that and Morrowind.
  • Love the gow collection and cant wait till its on vita

  • So many games, so little time.

  • God of war was an awesome game. I'm not surprised that they were ranked 1

  • KINGDOM HEARTS **BRAAAHHHH**
  • I really want a Kingdom Hearts collection that includes the Final Mixes.

  • Halo shouldn't count, imo. I mean, that is a full blown remake - sure it features the chunky original assets, but it's a completely different beast compared to the other HD collections here.

At any rate, cool. I just picked up Jak Collection HD (even though I played through all FOUR - Lost Frontier included - games last year for kicks, to "send off" my PS2 before handing it to my sister), and I've also loved the Sly, Tomb Raider and Team ICO collections. Those games are fantastic, and they offer up something that isn't being delivered in vast quantities by today's "let's just follow Call of Duty" games. We need more HD Platformers (can't wait for Sly 4 and Epic Mickey 2) and the types of memorable, creative games that Team ICO pumps out.

I'm so ****ing sick of derivative shooters with stupid stories, and people eschewing playability for "cinematic" moments. I don't care that you put a "Nate bumped his shoulder on the doorway" animation in Uncharted 3, Naughty Dog - I wanted to jump through the ****ing door before that tidal wave killed me! If more game characters controlled like Sly or Jak, the industry would be a better place.
  • Im soooo ashamed I havent played ico,or shadow of the C :-[
  • SILENT HILL HD!!!!

  • prediction: THPS HD remake will outsell within the first week.
