It's Official: Rift Sets Record For Most In-Game Marriages

by Jeff Cork on Feb 17, 2012 at 02:24 AM

Well, they actually did it. Trion Worlds has announced that they successfully set a Guinness record for the most in-game weddings performed in a 24-hour period. Trion's MMO Rift set this historic (and just slightly esoteric) record on Valentine's Day, which either makes it the most romantic story of the week, or something else entirely.

More than 40,000 people got virtually hitched in the game on February 14.

“Establishing this record was a monumental achievement for our development team and community of passionate players, and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Scott Hartsman, executive producer on Rift and Trion’s CCO. “Ascended Weddings were a great way to lift the veil on Rift’s new ‘Gatherings’ feature, social experiences that bring players together in new and interesting ways.  We look forward to expanding this great new gameplay element in the always-evolving world of Telara.”

Watch the video below to sample just some of the festivities. With shirtless dudes, people jumping on tables, and sheep, they're a lot like some of the weddings that I've attended in real life. Then again I grew up in Alaska, so don't trust anything I say on the subject.
